As unfit as %#!&

in health •  6 years ago

This photo was taken just under 2 years ago and just before my 38th birthday. I would like to say that the only thing that has really changed is that my daughter has grown and I have grown a beard but, that isn't quite the case. The last years have been pretty rough in various ways and insanely hectic and while it has taken a toll on many facets of life, it shouldn't have exacted such damage on my body.

Time to move?

We are all statistics being mined for our data but I am not planning on being one of those who has a body in the average category. One might say that there is no problem with average but these days, the average has a much higher fat percentage than the average a few decades ago and the core reason for it is self-inflicted lifestyle decisions, what is done and what is consumed.

I definitely need to start watching what I eat more than I do and I have to seriously curb my sweet tooth cravings that I have carried with me since childhood. I am by no means in the worst shape but considering what I do know, what I do do is definitely not in line with what I would consider taking care of myself. I am growing evermore conscious of the role model effect I am having on my daughter too.

Some people like to say it doesn't matter what one looks like but that is bullshit when it comes to a healthy or unhealthy body for the most part. While it may not be a perfect measure, you can see a fit person just by looking at them and, they are generally balanced in other areas too. I am not talking about those who are obsessive about their bodies, I am talking about those who care enough to understand that it has to last them 80 odd years, perhaps more if they are much younger than myself.

I don't really have the time to exercise like I used to exercise so I am going to have to get a little creative in that area but I am able to change the way I eat pretty easily and that will go a long way to getting me active again as the results will be seen pretty quickly. I am currently around 83 kilos and I would like to get down to between 72-75. The weight of course is pretty meaningless as a metric as I am relatively solid and once I start exercising, it will likely go up unless I burn a decent amount of fat.

I am terrible at working out at home but with so little opportunity to do otherwise, I will likely start with some rubber bands and Tabata interval training as I can squeeze 12-20 minutes in somewhere.

At the moment, I feel much too lethargic and under-powered. I have been to the gym once in the last year and I struggled to bench 80kg which used to be my warm up weight. The time I had been before that I was pushing 130-odd kilos so that is quite a dramatic drop. Again, the weight doesn't matter but it is a good way for an individual to gauge themselves against themselves.

As said, that photo was taken just under 2 years ago and I still wasn't happy with my condition as I wasn't overly energetic at that point either but better than now. Next month I turn 40 and while I am not planning on getting a convertible (even if Steem was 50 dollars), I am also not planning on giving up on my body. Too many people use phrases like, 'Be happy in your own skin' as an excuse to not take care of themselves while they flick through magazines complaining about what they see and how society pushes certain ideals and give dirty looks to those who are in better condition than themselves.

Umm.. what does it matter if you are happy in your own skin?
I call BS on these types of people

So, it is time to get something done about myself because while some people think the body is just a way to move the brain around, the way the body works fundamentally changes the way the brain grows, thinks and creates.

Eat less crap food, be more active.
Carbs are the devil.

I just went to the dentist and found out I have a few cavaties and needless to say the bill is going to be enough where im going to be making more of an effort to get healthy because im assuming Ive gotten them from my sweet tooth and soda. I think it was a big wake up call for me today to start taking better care of myself as well.

I have always had pretty good teeth but I am dreading going to the dentist next time. Perhaps I will have solid platinum ones put in instead :D

As you get older it gets harder to keep the stomach flat. Just remember these 3 things and let nature/science do the rest.

  1. Exercise 30 mins X 3 times a week. Can be as little as a dog walk
  2. Daily try to eat well. This means occasional binge eats or drinks is ok. For me not eating the white bread before a meal made a huge difference.
  3. Keep your acidity low. Easiest way, no bubbly drink of any kind (which also cuts out allot of Sugar. Conversely try to increase your alkaline levels). Research it :) some even say this alone makes up to 65% of why fat cells are bloaty with water.

These 3 things keep my gut down to a err...reasonable size. Failure to not do any of these 3 and gut exands.. :(. Give it a try and keep a journal for a short term to see if it works, you should see results very quickly if your stomach is just a bit on the fatty side

All the best

I have never really looked into the acidity thing and have always wondered how much of a difference it would actually make. I am not much of a soda drinker but there are plenty of other 'areas of opportunity' that I could work on diet-wise :D

THanks for the tips.

I am not talking about those who are obsessive about their bodies

Thank goodness!! otherwise if I would have the luck to meet you someday personally, I'd be afraid of shake hands with you and giving you the big tightly hug that you deserves. };)

If you can do it, go ahead. I will turn 46 and look like I'm 55 or so. I lost some 15 kilos adn have a poor diet. Nothing that i can do about it, we are talking about survival diet. You eat what you find or what you can afford.
I have always thought that the body is an integral part of the mind, regardless of media images and messages
The cultivation of the body is important beyond the simple self-esteem issues. Unfortunately, under certain circumstances there is little we can do about it.
I keep struggling to create better condition where body and mind can work in harmony.
Best of luck in your resolution

It really doesn’t matter how you look but should for your own benefits not for others. I have also struggled in my adulthood with my weight and have tried to remain consistent but, as you, my sweet tooth is my enemy. I have started again this year and am happy to past the first month which has often been my challenge in the past. Luckily, I have remained active for a couple of months as I tried @actifit out to motivate me with my new found passion of Steem! It has helped me be accountable for my level of activity and now with the diet portion am seeing results quicker than I usually would. Give it a try!

I have the app but have rarely remembered to put it on and I am not so keen on posting a report on the chain. I know that you don't have to but still.

This. Every neuron inside-outside is connected to the brain in some way, so it's flawed thinking to see them as separate.

A lot of the times I just hit a few sets of pull-ups (on a bar inserted at a door frame) and push-ups when I'm waiting for my food to prepare. And now I can finally start doing handstanding again and practice handstand push-ups, because it seems like my wrist problem is finally recovering after 2+ years - I used to experience pain in it when facing palms down the floor which made handstanding impossible without parallettes (which I don't have).

I don't actually go to a gym at all, the only reason why I would though is because of deadlifting, although a somewhat similar effect could be replicated just by lifting some stones or maybe furnace if there are no stones available :D

Also, I know it's hard with your busy schedule to achieve, but sleeping enough definitely helps with the sugar/carb cravings.

Yep, connected forever. until we can upload our minds of course.

I would like to do this but unfortunately the way the doors are made in the apartment makes it impossible. Crappy Finnish building :D

Ahh lookit her little gummy smile the cuteness it hurts XD

Carbs are long term energy. I like carbs. I don't like those stupid magazines XD

Yeah, I hardly remember her at this age. She has always been a cutie though :D

I’ve been rocking a diet my man. In about a month I’ve lost around 17 pounds.

If you want some tips just let me know. I’m getting ready to start the exercise phase soon.

Cheers. I think I know what to do, the doing of what I know is the problem :D

What can I say? Good luck!

lol. I definitely would devour that pretty fast. I am terrible when it comes to good desserts (or bad desserts) and have to constantly take myself off of autopilot when shopping because almost by instinct, I end up with a handful of sugar :)

Didn't read, just saw a very muscled arm and clicked to see if there was more.

#disappointmentoftheday

hahaha... unfortunately, you have seen the reality of the middle-aged man that is left. :D

:')

In all seriousness though: I'm not moving enough either since about three years - I can do 5000 steps maybe every other day, which is not enough and I gained quite a lot of weight due to it. So I turned to strength training a year ago, and although I love the muscles I gained it doesn't 'melt' the fat. Really need some cardio too. I'm now doing Kettlebells from home: 5 minutes of 'Kettlebell Swings' and you're sweating and breathing like you ran a marathon. Maybe it's something for you to try as well. I do it straight out of bed before going in the shower. Feels super effective :D

I am thinking about doing something like this but the problem is I only think about it, not actually do it :D

Inserting an unimaginative motivation quote by Shia Laböf: "Just do it" :D
