Should We Be Drinking Alkaline Water?

in health •  7 years ago

I just recently saw at my local corner store that had a sign outside that said, "Alkaline Water Sold Here." The first thing that came into my mind was? "Is this a scam." Water is water, right? For me, the only thing when buying a bottle of water is off course the label and the price. However, being into health, I began to question the science behind alkaline water. Exactly what makes one type of water more alkaline than others, and is it actually any much better for you than normal tap water?

Acid vs. Alkaline

Initially, let's begin with a brief science lesson. The pH scale determines the level of acidity of a compound, and it varies from 0 to 14, with 0 being the most acidic and 14 being one of the most alkaline. If a pH is greater than 7, the food is meant to be alkaline. Most of the spring water has a pH of 7, while lemon juice has a pH of 2. Alkaline water is abundant in alkalizing minerals, like calcium, potassium, and magnesium, making it less acidic than normal tap water, with a pH above 7.

Some research studies recommend that consuming an excess of acid-forming foods (like meat, caffeine, and sugar) triggers the body to pull alkalizing minerals-- like calcium-- from the bone to reduce the effects of the blood, which deteriorates the bone. Another popular theory is that consuming acidic foods might trigger swelling, which, in turn, triggers health problems like cancer. With all this worry of acid in the body, many of us are heading to drink alkaline water with a pH of 8 or greater.

Can Alkaline Water Reduce Acid in the Body?

Alkaline water is promoted as having the ability to reduce the effects of a few of the acids in the body, reducing some unfavourable health results. However, the body's pH is securely controlled by lots of internal systems, and after food is absorbed, it takes a trip into the stomach where it is broken down by natural acids. It then leaves the stomach and journeys to different organs as an acidic physical fluid. No level of alkaline water will alter these body systems, so downing the stuff for that function is practically a lost effort.

Exist Any Health Advantages?

Although you cannot alter the body's internal pH, you might have the ability to score some health gain from drinking alkaline water-- particularly if you're an athlete. Exercising at your max capability (think about running till you cannot run any longer) develops more hydrogen ions than typical workout, which triggers an accumulation of lactic acid and tiredness. One research study revealed that drinking alkalized water might help in reducing the accumulation of lactic acid and cardiorespiratory tension.

Lots of us think that it's not the pH of the water that produces the athletic advantages, however the mineral supplements. For instance, a magnesium shortage can increase the quantity of oxygen the body requires, making workout feel harder. Including minerals into the water assists combat these impacts.
