Now that we are getting real witnesses in place again, what do you think about using the DAO to benefit STEEM? Specifically, I think we should take the SBDs that have accumulated in there and use them to buy and burn STEEM over time. The exact numbers can be ironed out, but using something like 10k SBDs per day to buy/burn STEEM would put a solid bid under STEEM and not tank the market price of SBDs. Also, I think we should turn off the inflation to the DAO and move that inflation back to authors on steemit. Those two things combined would be hugely bullish for STEEM and it would simply come from the unused assets we already have. What are your thoughts on this?

Yes, we were discussing this topic recently in our witness channel and I'm almost on the same page as you are. Here is a summary of my thoughts on this:
In general, also I'm for regularly converting/selling the SBD to STEEM and then burning those, as this will have positive effects on the price of STEEM and also curators will earn more again (which comes with other positive side effects). Basically it could be used for having a better controllable SBD price (pegged SBD would then probably to some degree work the other way around too, currently it's only pegged to be >= 1 USD).
The question is, how we would do this when selling on the market. Manually? We could have one active proposal over the return proposal (when enough of us vote for it), which receives the max available daily amount in a by us controllable account (as steem.dao has no keys). This would not require a new HF/SF.
But I think moving the inflation from the DAO to the authors would not benefit us in the long run (not 100% sure, but going back would be difficult). Doing it manually (without moving the inflation away from the DAO with a fork) gives us more possibilities to react to whatever might happen in future. I would not even say that the target SBD price should be 1 USD. Maybe 2-3 USD to get started. We could burn also SBD, in case the price goes below our target.

I think it would make sense to use the DAO to drive up the price of STEEM. Burning the purchased steem seems wasteful to me, although it is the simplest option.

I'm not sure why we would want the price of SBDs to stay high. I think there's a good chance that the economy would work better with the price of SBDs below 1USD. This would allow investors to make money via SBD conversions.

Pricing SBD below $1 is also not good. Think of it this way. SBD is nothing but Steem wrapped in a smart contract. This is done using the median witness feed price published. So, if the price of SBD is below $1, we would actually be having more Steem wrapped in the SBD smart contract.

What makes that "not good"? It doesn't seem like it has anything intrinsically good or bad about it, that's just the way it works. Is there some implication you see that I don't?

So, when you get rewarded for your posts and choose to get 50% Steem and 50% SBD, what happens is that 50% of the author payout gets converted into SBD by wrapping Steem in a contract. To this internal system, the value of 1 SBD is always $1. Now, if the actual value of SBD goes below $1, there would actually be more Steem backing SBD that it's supposed to. So, anyone who chooses a 50/50 payout would actually be losing funds cause of this.

Nobody would be "losing funds". Anybody with a Steem account can do a conversion. I am not saying that the price should somehow be permanently fixed at $0.60 or something. What I'm saying is that I think the economy will be healthier when the price is in the range where it is supposed to be, near $1 USD, with opportunities for investors to make money on conversions when the price drops below $1 USD (and those actions tend to cause the price to go back up).

The thing is not many know about the internal conversion that already exists. In fact, I got to know about this earlier this month. Anyone who uses the internal market over the direct conversion would be losing out a bit.

The thing is not many know about the internal conversion that already exists.

Unlike things which require hardforks or new code, etc., publicizing features that already exist and work is exactly the sort of problem that the current powers that be are well equipped to solve. That is our ideal scenario, not one we want to avoid.

In my opinion, this would actually be a good thing and ties more STEEM to the platform. If you earn less by a 50/50 payout, you'd naturally change your payout to 100% power-up to maximise your returns. This in itself has the benefit or keeping more STEEM within the system.

Does the complexity in which the system's designed matter?

This is something even I agree with entirely. Having a pegged SBD would increase its use case and would likely also increase the author rewards with the increase in the price of Steem. Additionally, manual curation would most probably be back if we achieve this.

I do not think so, but those who buy an upvote for their post will then not be as profitable

True. That should most probably fix the trending page to a certain extent at least.
