Hi friends,
It is yet another week in the steemit engagement challenge and I'm delighted to present my entry. Today I'm entering my 2nd contest for the week in this noble community because of how interesting this topic looks. We are looking at a more real and everyday use topic called the Internet of Things and Blockchain technology.

I will be attempting the questions below as a sign of my participation in the contest and I do hope you will read till the end because there is much information that will be shared during this very task. Without any further ado, let's get started.

Explain in your own words, what is IoT?

mine.PNG

IoT is an acronym that stands for Internet of Things. As the word suggests, the Internet of Things simply means the interconnection of things around us via the internet. In simpler terms, we can see IoT as the connection of physical devices such as our cars, our houses, our mobile devices, our offices etc.

When these devices are connected and they can share and exchange data, we called that act the Internet of Things (IoT). The main function of IoT is to make our everyday lives easy and simple and also to reduce costs.

For instance, if you come to the house and your gate is automated, all you need is remote to open the gate or a sensor connected that share data with the car and will be able to know and sense that you're coming from afar and then open the gate for you.

With IoT, life is expected to be easier and simpler and even more comfortable. The coming of IoT has though made a lot of people lose their jobs but it has also proved to be more effective and reliable and also reduces some unnecessary cost that was formally incurred by many.

Examples of IoT devices include smartphones, home appliances, automated doors in our homes, offices or even in the bank, computer gadgets, robots etc. All these devices mentioned above and more can share and exchange data via the internet which makes them communicate effectively.

Let's look briefly at the various uses of IoT

  • IoT can be used to keep track of what is going on in a particular place even when we are not present in that arena. If your phone is connected to your CCTV at home and there seems to be some sort of theft, you can get a notification and also see exactly how the entire thing happens when you check the footage.

  • IoT is used to make work easier and faster. As you approach a door that is using IoT it opens immediately and when you have a robot in your house that has been trained into doing some certain task, it will effectively deliver without any mistake at all.

  • With IoT, we find things easier without asking too many questions. For example, if you are travelling, your google map, as well as your GPS, will guide you to the place you have not been before without any issues.

What impact does the blockchain have on the Internet of Things?

mine.PNG

The impact of blockchain on the internet of things can never be overemphasised. I have said this because blockchain plays quite a vital role when it comes to the Internet of things. We are aware that IoT shares data between devices they are connected with to enable them effectively communicate with each other.

Now, this data can sometimes be manipulated if not recorded on the blockchain. Blockchain is decentralized in nature and that makes the data stored immutably. When there is no centralized authority during the process of exchanging data such data can be trusted because it has not been corrupted or edited by a third party.

With the coming of blockchain into IoT, many unnecessary cost has been cut down an example is the cost of verification by a third party, these have also eliminated delays when it comes to the delivery of result because the data are exchanged directly between the connected devices.

Another aspect where the blockchain has played a vital role in IoT is the aspect of security as well as privacy. Blockchain has made data more secure since no one can have access to edit it. You have your privacy because you alone have access to your to lock and unlock certain devices using some sort of control measures.

What benefits does blockchain offer to the Internet of Things?

mine.PNG

There are many benefits that blockchain technology offers to the Internet of Things and a few of them include decentralization, security, privacy and trust. Let's discuss the items listed above in more detail below.

Decentralization: One of the benefits that blockchain offers to the Internet of Things is decentralization. Decentralization helps to eliminate the use of the third party in the IoT function because this causes many delays and costs as well. At the same time, users can now rely on the data shared because it has not to be tempered by a third party.

Security: Everyone using a system tends to look out for the security of his/her data. The blockchain as we all know is a distributed ledger that stores information permanently and any data stored can not be edited or deleted and which makes the data stored more secure. So this is one of the biggest benefits that the blockchain offers to IoT.

Privacy: Privacy is another benefit that the blockchain has offered to the internet of things. Most times, there are few pieces of data that we wouldn't want to be accessible by others hence we securely protect them using our private key or password. These can not be accessed or tampered with since it is stored on the blockchain, here you have full control of such data.

Trust: Due to the security measure on the blockchain where data can not be manipulated once stored, users can now have much trust in the IoT. This is because the data provided for use will always be the original data as no one will have access to edit or delete the data stored in the blockchain. This gives users to mindset to trust the work of IoT.

Explain two applications of IoT and blockchain.

mine.PNG

There are many applications of IoT and blockchain technology. Due to the impact of blockchain on IoT, many industries have started adopting the use of blockchain technology. So in this section, I'm going to be discussing the application of IoT and blockchain in the health sector and also the application of IoT and blockchain in component tracking.

IoT and blockchain in the health sector: The application of these two technologies in the health sector has improved the way health issues are solved. With both technologies, health providers easily share information and get instant responses when it comes to seeking clarification and the data of patients are stored more securely.

With both technologies, a patient record can never be deleted and that gives the next doctors an overview of what the patient might have passed through which will help them give a recommendation based on the previous illness. As we know when you are sick and you go to the hospital, you will be asked a series of questions with regards to your health previously but with blockchain, those details can be gotten without you being physically present at the hospital.

More also, these technologies can aid in treatment and recommendation if the patient lives here in Nigeria and the specialist lives in Brazil, they can through IoT communicate the fastest way to treat that illness with patients travelling to Brazil. So in essence, both tech has played a vital role in the health sector.

IoT and blockchain in component tracking: A lot of manufacturers today put a tracking device in their product so they can easily track it for security purposes. A good example is when you hire a car to go to a certain place. This car will be allowed to move up to the very point you have hired it to go and anything outside that point, the car will go off.

I was recently watching a movie where someone hired a car and because he was given the car without anyone following him he decided that he want to run away with it. When the car got to a certain level in the town it went off if he wants to come back the car started but if he wants to go further the car will stop. That is a clear example of IoT and blockchain because the data used for the car cannot be edited hence it has to obey all set rules.

Explain a blockchain project that relates to IoT.

mine.PNG

Many blockchain projects relate to IoT but for the sake of this task, I'm going to focus on one unique one that I believe everyone should know about in this year 2022.

The blockchain project that relates to IoT that I will like to discuss with us today is called IOTEX.IO, this is a platform that is decentralized in nature which means it allows for complete ownership of whatever you have. Here in this platform, developers as well as smart device manufacturers have the privilege to develop dApps in which users can monetize whatever data they have.

For the security of the data of various users, the platform uses blockchain technology and smart contract to bridge the gap between the third party and make transactions faster and more reliable. A smart contract is used during the authentication of any transaction and payment on the system.

To reduce the cost and make the platform more scalable, the platform has its native token called the IOTX, this token is used to pay for various services that are offered on the platform. The platform is fast, secure and decentralized in nature and it connects real-world devices, data and utility to blockchain dApps to monetize the data by its various users.

It may interest you to know that IOTEX.IO was developed by some members of prominent applications such as Google, Facebook etc. Scientists and engineers who have worked on the applications listed above and more are the ones that came together to set up this wonderful platform and the main aim is that dApps can be set up for users to monetize their data.

Conclusion

mine.PNG

A project that is built using IoT and blockchain technology is no doubt a very powerful project. I don't think I'm wrong to say that blockchain has come to solve all the lapses we were having in the IoT sector. With blockchain, we see more security, transparency and even trust in the data recorded since it can not be edited or removed. I want to finally invite @naka05, @josevas217, @msharif, @sduttaskitchen and @eliany to join the contest.

The Internet of Things is a vast network of connected devices. These devices aggregate and share data about how they are used and the environment in which they operate. This is all done using sensors, which are embedded in every physical device. It can be your mobile phone, appliances Pecos barcode sensors traffic lights and almost everything you come across in your daily life. These sensors are constantly emitting data about the working status of the devices, but the important question is how do they share so much data, how do we provide this data for our benefit iot provides a common platform for all these devices to dump their data. And a common language enables all devices to communicate with each other. Data is emitted from various sensors and sent to the iot platform. The secure iot platform integrates the collected data from various sources and performs further analysis on the data to extract valuable information as required. at last. Results are shared with other devices to improve user experience automation and increase efficiency. Let's look at a scenario where IoT is working wonders. In AC manufacturing it's all about building machines and there are sensors on the belts that continuously send data about the health of the machines and production details and the manufacturer identifies the problem in advance. A barcode is attached to each product before it leaves the belt. The manufacturer uses this data to identify where the product is. So, distribute and track the retailer's stock. The manufacturer can make the product run out of stock available. Next this product is the packaging and parcel. to different retailers. Every retailer has a barcode reader to track upcoming products from different manufacturers, manage inventory, check special instructions and many more. The compressor air conditioner has an embedded sensor that emits data about its health and temperature. These data are not allies that constantly allow the customer to guarantee to contact you in time for repair work. This is just one scenario out of a million. We have smart appliances, smart cars, smart homes, smart cities iot is redefining the way we live and transforming the way we interact with technology.

IoT has made things very easy for many lives through the innovation from those devices that allows us to remotely and that reduces stress and helps us to manage our time very well.

With both technologies, health providers easily share information and get instant responses when it comes to seeking clarification and the data of patients are stored more securely.

I agree with you on this and even the devices can be connected to a patient while the health personnel assigned to the case can monitor the health status of the patient even when they are outside the hospital.

It may interest you to know that IOTEX.IO was developed by some members of prominent applications such as Google, Facebook etc.

Owh that's very good for current technological developments. We will see how in the future big companies will take this step, and I'm sure that there will be good news in a few more years where all of this is to facilitate and simplify the work of us humans.
Success is always for you... 👍

I don't think I'm wrong to say that blockchain has come to solve all the lapses we were having in the IoT sector.

you are not, the lapses of both fields have somehow been covered by their integration. Maybe not all, but a considerable lot. The centralization feature of the IoT which may make It prone to single point failure would be accounted for by the decentralization and distributed feature of blockchains
