Good news from the big subcontinent. The Government of India has approved the construction of LIGO-India.
This is a laser interferometric gravitational wave observatory that will be almost identical to the two American LIGO observatories.
The Government of India will spend about $320 million on the project, with the first results expected at the end of the decade.
Part of the preparatory work has already been carried out:
- the observatory buildings have been designed
- the roads have been built
- the vacuum chambers have been manufactured and tested
LIGO-India will be built in the Indian state of Maharashtra and will be the fifth gravitational wave observatory.
The other ones are two LIGO detectors in the US, the Virgo in Italy and the KAGRA in Japan.
The interferometer will expand the network of observations.
But most importantly, due to its geographical location, it will improve the accuracy with which scientists can localize gravitational wave events by an order of magnitude.
