What is Plantar Fasciitis? |
---|
Write in your own words after getting knowledge from the lesson post. |
--- |
Plantar Fasciitis is a health condition that affects the foot. It causes pain in the bottom of the heel. It happens when a thick band of tissue called "Plantar fascia" gets inflamed. This Plantar Fascia connects the heel bone to the toes.
- Acute Plantar Fasciitis
This is long standing inflammation and pain in the Plantar Fasciitis which develops overtime. One of the major symptom is constant pain and Inflammation for less than a month.
- Chronic Plantar Fasciitis
This is long standing inflammation and pain in the Plantar Fasciitis which develops overtime. One of the major symptom is constant pain and Inflammation for a long time as long as a month.
Other types of Plantar Fasciitis includes
Plantar fascia rupture
Plantar Fasciitis with heel spurs
Unilateral Plantar Fasciitis
Bilateral Plantar Fasciitis
Insertional Plantar Fasciitis
Non-Insertional Plantar Fasciitis
Symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis |
---|
- Excruciating pain
Victims usually feels sharp pains in the heel, especially after having a rest or in the morning after waking up from sleep.
- Arch pain
This is a renowned symptom of Plantar Fasciitis. This pain is usually felt in the arch of the heel.
- Swelling
Victim also experiences swelling along the heel bone.
- Stiffnes
Victim also experiences stiffness in the heel.
- Right Achilles tendon
This is feeling of tightness in the Achilles tendon which connects the calf muscles to your Knee bone.
Causes of Plantar Fasciitis |
---|
- Overuse
Doing activities like dancing, skipping, jumping, running, and walking for too long can lead to Plantar Fasciitis.
- Wearing poor fitted footwears
This is usually seen among the ladies. Putting on shoes that don't produce enough support to the body can result to Plantar Fasciitis.
- Obesity
Over weight can result to over stress on the body and this make the legs unable to carry the weight of the body, thereby causing extra strain on the Leg which can results to Plantar Fasciitis.
- Age-related factors
As we advanced in age, there is a high tendency for the Plantar fascia to become less pliable and more stiffer thereby being prone to developing Plantar fascia.
Treatment for Plantar Fasciitis |
---|
Some of the treatment of Plantar Fasciitis includes.
- Avoid strenuous activities
Resist from engaging in activities that can cause strain on the Plantar fascia.
- Apply Icepacks
Always apply ice packs to your heels after engaging in strenuous activities inorder to reduce strain on the Plantar fascia.
- Physical Therapy
You can employ the service of a therapist who can show you the Exercises to carry out.
- Medications
Pain relieving drugs like Ibuprofen, Diclofenac and Naproxen can be taken to relieve pain and inflammation.
- Corticosteroids Injection
This Injection can be injected to the Plantar fascia to reduce pain and Inflammation.
How would you diagnose a plantar fasciitis? Any clinical investigation or assessment tests? |
---|
Plantar Fasciitis assessment and diagnosis involves a whole lot of process and they includes.
- Medical History
The Doctor will ask you if you're experiencing symptoms like arch pain, stiffness etc. He will also ask you when you started experiencing these symptoms, the severity and how long it has lasted. He might also ask after the kind of footwears you put on, the kind of activities you engage on to know where the problem is from.
- Physical Examination
The Doctor will examine your foot, laying emphasis on the bottom of the foot around the heel to check out for tenderness. He would also check out for the Pliability of the foot.
- Imaging Test
This test is carried out to know the state of the bone, inorder to know if there is a damage or fracture in the bone.
- MRI
This test shows more district picture of the soft tissues in the foot. It's usually conducted when other treatments is ineffective.
- Windlass Test
This is one of the test uses to diagnose Plantar Fasciitis. To perform this, the patients is asked to raise his heels thereby leaving the toes to carry the weight to know if he will feel pain. If he feels pain then it's sign of Plantar Fasciitis.
- Dorsiflexion Test
This test is used to access the flexibility of the ankle joint to know if pain which is symptom of Plantar Fasciitis will be noticed. To do this, the patient is asked to move his foot upward towards the shin and if pain is felt in the heel then the result is positive.
- Toe Extension
To perform this, the patient is asked to stretch his toes upward and if he feels pain in the heels then it's positive.
Try to practice at least 3 exercises that you have learned from the lesson. Share images, gifs or videos while practising. |
---|
- Ball/Frozen rolling
To perform this, I sat down on a seat and then stretched out my legs.
I then placed the bottle under the arch of my foot and then I gently rolled the bottle back and forth. I performed this exercise for about 3minutes.
- Heel raise Exercise
To perform this, I stood up and raised my heels and standing with my toes, then I lowered it back. I did this routine for a couple of times for about 3 minutes.
- Toe Curl exercise
To perform this, I sat down on the floor and stretched out my foot and then slowly I curled my toes and I then released it. I performed this routine a couple of times for about 4 minutes.
Share your review after performing these exercises either on yourself, healthy individual or patient. |

As a first timer who has not performed those exercises before, I felt pain when I performed the Heel raise and Toe Curl exercise but after awhile my leg muscles relaxed and the pain started. My Legs felt stretched and flexible after performing it. The Ball/Frozen rolling was the easiest Exercise that I performed. It gave a relaxing and soothing effect on my legs.
It was quite an interesting class and I really learnt a lot. All thanks to the Teacher. Thanks for reading through my post, I invite @kidi40, @chiagoziee and @blessedbee to participate in this contest.

Thank you for understanding the lesson and sharing your assignment; I hope that you will enjoy this week's lesson and try to implement it in your life if you see any such case.
Observations
Task 1 (3/3)
You have shared a great knowledge about plantar fasciitis, it's symptoms, causes, and types. Plantar Fasciitis can be caused by many reasons and that's good you point out then. I appreciate your effort.
Task 2 (3/3)
In the second question, you tell us about how you have to assess a patient by doing physical examination and history taking, performing investigations and specialized tests. Excellent.
Task 3 (3.8/4)
You try the toe curls, bottle rolling and heel raise. You did the toe curls, heel raise and bottle rolling correctly. But try to make gifs instead of images for more clearance and understanding. Always remember to cold therapy & rest is the best therapy in the treatment of plantar fasciitis. I appreciate your efforts.
Overall you made a great attempt to answer all the questions. I appreciate your efforts. But next time try to avoid the above written suggestions. Keep learning and try to implement your knowledge to the people suffering from plantar fasciitis or any type of heel pain. Thank you.
