Published in 1860, Great Expectations by Charles Dickens centers on a young boy trying to navigate life within a world filled with a terrible jealousy, self-ambition and complexities of human relationships. The narrative is chronicled from the perspective of Pip who is brought up by his sister and her husband in a country side as a ward. This status quo changes after one day he encounters the bandit Magwitch and later meets the rather unusual Miss Havisham and the attractive but frigid Estella.
Pip aspires to go over his less privileged background and therefore becomes a gentleman, thinking that might gain him the love of Estella. But as he finds himself in positions of power and riches, he realizes that affluence and social standings are not the keys to happiness or moral fortitude. As various events unfold, Pip matures through the experience and realizes the importance of loyalty, respect, and what it is to be a great man.
Visions from Dickens give life to many characters, act or appear in several plots and come with great irony and demonstrate emotional depth which leads pip to the actualization that accolades cannot and should be given out but rather earned through pure goodwill and love.
