The markhor, an impressive wild goat species, is living on the mountainous terrains of central asia- Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Northern India. This impressive animal is beautifully designed and spirally has cone-like horns the length of which reaches incredible 1.5m that seem almost too big for the high mountain dwelling animals. Mature males possess huge horns and a voluminous woolen coat, while mature females are smaller and shallower.
Markhor also focuses on finding things they can climb to overcome rugged edges and slopes to search for the grassy surface, leaves, and shrubs that are mostly their diet. Even with such flexibility, the markhor is however reported to be endangered owing to loss of habitat, hunting, and even grazing by domestic animals which bring a lot of competition.
The last five years have seen a gradual increase in markhor number in parts of Pakistan through conservation self-help projects set up by local people. Markhor is the National Animal of Pakistan, representing may be strength, resilience and balance between humans and nature.
