MetaMask is a cryptocurrency software wallet used to communicate with the Ethereum blockchain and it allows users to access their Ethereum (ERC-20) wallet via a browser extension or mobile application, which can be used to communicate with legitimate applications.

MetaMask allows users to store and manage account keys, stream transactions, send and receive cryptocurrencies and tokens based on Ethereum, and securely connect to distributed applications via a compatible web browser or built-in mobile browser application.

The app incorporates an integrated Ethereum token exchange service by combining several widely distributed exchanges (DEXs) to obtain the best exchange rate. This feature, labeled MetaMask Swaps, charges 0.875% of the service cost

MetaMask was launched in 2016 by ConsenSys, a blockchain software company focused on Ethereum-based tools and infrastructure. Until 2019, MetaMask was only available as a desktop browser extension for Google Chrome and Firefox browsers.

Given the popularity of MetaMask among cryptocurrency users, as well as its lack of an official mobile app for several years, malicious software conditions have made MetaMask a problem for Google in managing the Chrome Web Store and Google Play frameworks.

In one instance, Google Play unintentionally deleted the official beta MetaMask app before returning a decision a week later on January 1, 2020.

Starting in 2019, MetaMask began releasing versions of the closed beta test app, followed by their official release for iOS and Android in September 2020.

In October 2020, MetaMask Swaps, a built-in DEX integration utility launched a desktop extension. The product was only available on mobile devices by March 2021.

Step-1

To install MetaMask on PC, search on Google "MetaMask" and you will find https://metamask.io/ on search result. Click on Download.

Step-2

After clicking the download option, you will get the below screen. MetaMask supports 4 browsers Chrome, Firefox, Brave & Edge and you can download it with Chrome, IOS, and Android.

Step-3

Here we will see how to set up MetaMask on Chrome browser and we will click on the Install MetaMask for Chrome button.

Step-4

Now, Chrome Web Store will open and we will click on Add To Chrome button. Google Chrome will download a small MetaMask file that will be installed on your computer and will get the message

"Welcome to MetaMask Connecting you to Ethereum and the Decentralized Web. We’re happy to see you." - MetaMask

Now, click Add Extension button to install software in your Chrome browser.

Now, click on Click to Start button to start MetaMask Wallet application.

Step-7

Now, the browser will ask New to MetaMask? and if you are not new and you have already an ERC-20 wallet and have a Secret Recovery Phrase and if you want to import your existing wallet using a Secret Recovery Phrase, you can select Import wallet option.

And if you have no ERC-20 and/or want to create a new wallet then simply click on Create a Wallet button. So, here we will create a new wallet for your easy understanding.

Step-8

After clicking on Create a Wallet button, we will see below instruction screen so we have to click on I Agree button after reading all the information.

Step-9

Now, MetaMask will ask you to enter your Wallet Password. You have to enter a good and healthy password two times to confirm the same and click on the Create button.

Step-10

After clicking on the Create button, you will see a screen with the "Secure your wallet" screen, and there we will see a video tutorial and instructions for the security purpose.

Step-11

After clicking on the Next button, it will ask to reveal "Secret Backup Phrase" for your wallet backup in case you forget your private key. Please note down Secret Backup Phrase safely in your private diary and then again click on the Next button.

Step-12

You will be asked for "Confirm your Secret Backup Phrase" and you have to select the entire Phrase as per the same sequence as you noted down your Secret Backup. Then select the done button.

Step-13

Cheers, you have successfully created your ERC-20 wallet with MetaMask and it will be like the screen below. You will be able to Buy, Sell or Swap your ERC-20 assets from your wallet on MetaMask. Account1 is showing your ERC-20 wallet address. You can share it with any exchanges to send and receive your crypto assets from and to anywhere that supports this asset.
