This was an incredible trip that I will never forget. Ella has a wet climate with frequent rains. It rained on the day that we climbed Ella rock as well. We had planned for a 2-day trip and planned to camp on the top of Ella rock. But camping had been prohibited on Ella rock and none of us had known about it. We had planned to camp as my brother had camped at Ella rock about a year before. So, our plan was ruined, and we had to face a very big problem of a place where we could stay at night. During that time, a friend of my friend lived in Wellawaya.

Wellawaya is the nearest town to the Ella, but the climate is completely different to Ella. There is a warmer climate and less rain around the year. My friend called and he said that his friend could come to pick us up, but he needed some time. He also said that there was a “Rawana Guhawa” (Rawana cave) near to Ella which we could visit till he came. So, we went to watch Rawana Guhawa. This is an uncommon tourism place which even many Sri Lankans do not know about (There are several Rawana Guha/Caves. This is one of them but is uncommon). It was a marvelous place and is located on top of another mountain. There is an almost endless cave and is very dark.

During the time we spent there, the call that we were expecting came and the friend was waiting for us at the bottom of the rock. So, we started to climb down the mountain but unexpectedly, there was a heavy rain, and our umbrellas did not give protection. We couldn’t use umbrellas because of the wind and there was no place to hide us from the rain. We climbed down the rock during the rain, and it was very dangerous because we couldn’t see the way clearly and there was a step fall to hell on one side as well.

Next, we reached Wellawaya and there is a Wewa (lake) near the Buduruwagala temple and we decided that our camp should be placed on the wew thawulla (the land next to the lake). We set up camp and made a campfire. We cooked our dinner, and we sang song all night. The next day we were tired because, although we decided to sleep, the problem was wild elephants were on the next side of the lake and we heard their trumpeting over the night. So, no one could sleep except the friend who was from the village. All of us were silent but he was snoring. The whole night we were counting time until sun rise.

When first light came to the lake, we cleaned the place, packed our things, and came back to the friend’s home.

The other day, we visited the village, and it was a very beautiful village. I recommend that if anyone comes to Wellawaya, you must visit the buduruwagala Because there is a very beautiful village and the villagers were very friendly.

Ella is a good place to travel and ella rock is the best there. Too bad that camping is not allowed anymore.

Yes, the sunrise view from Ella Rock can be enjoyed while camping. But we have missed it.
