Introduction

How do people become leaders? Normally, there are naturally born leaders, they have the charisma, they don't need to be dragged about with the art of leadership. While on the other hand, we have exceptional leaders who are taught leadership skills. These people turned out to be excellent leaders through discipline, dedication, hard work and consistency.

How do you encourage your children to take up leadership roles? Do you give them a free hand to thrive?

School Leadership

Last week at my school, the school management saw the need to appoint student leaders in the school. The students were allowed to speak about their initiatives, their aims and objectives towards the position they aspired for. I watched the whole event with admiration as a Government subject teacher. I don't just teach them, I also give them the hints needed to stand out as future leaders both in government, the business world and wherever they find themselves.

At the end of the whole event, they were being voted for, based on their personalities and aspirations. They were being presented to the students after due process as their new leaders functioning in different capacities, such as the Senior School Prefect and assistant, Sanitary, Labour and Social prefects both for the boys and girls.

Now, as parents, how do we teach our children leadership skills? Below are the few ideas I've outlined for us to take note of. Teach your children the following:

  • Communication: Always encourage your children to speak for themselves, let them speak their minds without being shot in. Expressing their thoughts will enhance their communication skills. There's no leader without good communication skills.
  • Teamwork: Teach your children to listen, work and cooperate with others. It starts from the home. With teamwork, they'll be able to achieve their goals.

  • Confidence: Encourage your children to have self-confidence, let them learn to take tasks by themselves and accomplish them without fear of failure. Teach them to be confident in themselves, never allow others to talk them down or make them feel bad about their looks or anything else.
  • Volunteering: Teach them empathy and the value of rendering services to others without the thought of any personal gain or reward. Let them know they'll be rewarded for their good work.
  • Be a good example of a good leader: Teach them good habits and having a good reputation. They need to learn time management from you.

Do you arrive late at meetings and event? You speak ill about others in the presence of your children? You're not setting a good example, it all begins with you. Be the leader you want to bring out of your young ones.
