Contest Winners Announcement for Traditional Roles and Values

Hello, friends!

We highly appreciate your participation and engagement in this contest that highlights our traditional roles and values. Your entries have prove to be very educational as it allows us take a pick into your coulture, showing how modernization and globalization has affected the way of life of your people.
Patriarchy had been a concept that was widely practiced, and the Ibibio people of AkwaIbom State also practiced it. Power was placed in the hands of the men and they were expected to protect and provide for the women with this power.
Due to the natural nature of men and women, the men were best suited for work outside the home which often required more physical strength, caurage and endurance working as farmers, hunters, wine tappers or as fishermen.
The women on the other hand were naturally built to nurse and nurture, managing what is brought home, keeping the house clean and running while caring for and training their children.

This setting saved us very well as long as the man was not selfish and could exercise loving headship over his household. It is believed that things went south when the men assumed that they were the one working, and selfishly refused to see how much work and contribution the woman was doing at home.

In the ibibio language, Daddy has a funny rhyme with "dat di" which translates 'to go and bring' while Mummy rhymes with "mmo mi" which translates 'I am here'.
The selfish thought by the men, that they are doing all the work now pushed the women to also go out and work. Coupled with the pressing demand from a biting economic crises and the effects of social media brought about by technology and the stigma attached to stay-at-home wifes, the woman are now working outside the home, the children are now cared for by housemaids which are mostly women who have left their own home to perform the same domestic duties for a fee. A woman leaves work at home to work outside and will employ another woman to do the work she left at home as she is buried neck deep in her careers.

Children get to learn different values from househelp, grandparents or the boarding school system. Resulting in serious breakdown and dysfunctional families. Men getting attached to housemaids as she cares for him and his children in the absence of his wife who is working to prove a point.
Creating a situation like that of a man who sacrifices his health to make money and once he has the money, he now tries to use the money to buy good health. We have become that man. We are dissatisfied, our home is broken, a devorce is filled and even if we remarry, it happens all over again, more complicated with step-this or that coming in to the picture.
