Abrazos!
Hello dear friends, how are you? I hope very, very well,
In this post I want to tell you about an experience that musicians usually have ... Some have them only once and others dedicate themselves to it, since it is truly a very unique experience, full of thousands of emotions and feelings.
Today I want to talk to you about what it is to play as a soloist specifically in front of a orchestra, since it is a little more common to do it in front of smaller groups or in bands, which is also extremely beautiful and rewarding.
To start we go for the essential, the concept of being a soloist. The word soloist, although it is very obvious, means that it has an important part in your voice or instrument, and may be a "solo" in any symphony, or a song.
The soloist with orchestra, of which I will speak today, has practically a piece or concert for him and the orchestra, where it is common to see the latter accompanying him and the soloist showing his version of the piece.
In my short career I have had the immense opportunity to be a soloist in front of the orchestra and in addition to being a concertmaster in solo works, which although both situations are similar, is not the same and I explain why:
- The solo violin must stand in front of the audience while the orchestra accompanies you in the piece or concert
- The solo concertmaster performs the fragments of the solos in his chair, in front of his lectern (the solo concertmaster is the main violin, who tunes the orchestra at the beginning)
Being a solo violin is a sway of emotions since you start studying the play, because it is from there that you begin to imagine the stage, the orchestra, the conductor and the people ... The nerve begins to appear and in me case, anxiety hahaha.
The preparation of the repertoire is the most important detail, precisely because when preparing it you prepare yourself mentally, having more security with yourself. The other nervous moment is above all the first rehearsal with the orchestra, where you start to see the characteristics of this and they see how your orchestra sees yours, while working according to the version that the soloist wants, and finally, the time of more Nerve is the concert but above all, the wait.
Personally, it affects me a lot to expect to play a work, it always makes me a little bad. It's my weakness. But the nervous moment changes to an anxious moment just when the applause begins and we must walk, together with the director, to introduce ourselves and bow, then greet the concertmaster and tune the violin with the (LA) of the first oboe ... So it is here, where we meet with the director, we all calm down a little and warn each other when we feel ready to start the concert.
As a solo violin I have had the opportunity to play with seven different orchestras (repeating concerts with some) and as a concertmaster I do not remember the exact number hahaha, but the most special I remember without a doubt are the concerts with the Lara Symphony and the Orchestra of the Instituto del Colon Theater.
Being a musician and being specifically a soloist is one of the most gratifying sensations I have had in my life as a musician, so when our whole world is normalized and we have a cure for all this that has us locked up, I invite you to go to concerts in the Orchestra of their cities to enjoy it and also support culture, a point that is very important.
Hugs!
