One of the reasons mirrors are used is to groom ourselves and ensure we look presentable. As a matter of fact, the use of mirrors cannot be overemphasized in our daily routines, such as applying makeup, styling the hair, shaving etc.

A mirror also helps create a physical awareness of one's self as one views his or her reflection in the mirror.

On one of those days, my aunt ventured to prepare a delicacy using the traditional kitchen at home where the use of pots layered with soots, use of the tripod stand, smoke, burning of firewood and the wonderful feel of charcoal was the order of the day.

Unconsciously, she had her hands smudged with charcoal, but that was all part of the process of making a meal.

As the meal came together, my aunty stepped out of the kitchen in a bid to get fresh air, wiping her brow with the back of her hand, unconsciously leaving a bold mark of charcoal on her forehead like a child's intentional painting.

Just outside the kitchen was a corridor bustling with family members and neighbors intentionally waiting for her delicious meal. When we saw her, we chuckled and smiled at ourselves but made sure our countenance didn't change (everyone co-operated just somehow).

The first person exclaimed with a grin," Oh aunty, you looked so beautiful today.

Another said this beauty surely means that the food will be delicious.

Person after person kept complimenting her looks as they passed by with a smile and some sense of humor. Auntie became flattered but looked a bit puzzled and suspected something was not adding up.

Curiosity got the best of her, and she strolled to the varendah just outside the house to use the aluminum window pane (a makeshift mirror we have been using over the years). She went to confirm her beauty using the mirror.

What she saw as her reflection sent her reeling in laughter (a thick undeniable mark of charcoal running across her forehead). It was hilarious 😂 as everyone could not hold themselves from laughing. She exclaimed" Ah! S this is the beauty they were talking about and even named the mark "The Chef's Mark ".

She washed her face and returned to the mirror to confirm it was all good.
