A Good Yarn, or a Bad Yarn: what narrative do we tell ourselves? Day 840: 5 Minute Freewrite

in hive-161155 •  5 years ago

Quick!

What is perhaps the greatest of human inventions, binding together people who never knew each other, citizens of distant epochs?

Books!

“What an astonishing thing a book is. It's a flat object made from a tree with flexible parts on which are imprinted lots of funny dark squiggles. But one glance at it and you're inside the mind of another person, maybe somebody dead for thousands of years. Across the millennia, an author is speaking clearly and silently inside your head, directly to you. Writing is perhaps the greatest of human inventions, binding together people who never knew each other, citizens of distant epochs. Books break the shackles of time. A book is proof that humans are capable of working magic."
Carl Sagan [Cosmos, Part 11: The Persistence of Memory (1980)]”

Yarn

is a string, a story, or whatever you need it to be when you start writing.

Yarn is a long continuous length of interlocked fibres, suitable for use in the production of textiles, sewing, crocheting, knitting, weaving, embroidery, or ropemaking. Thread is a type of yarn intended for sewing by hand or machine.
Yarn - Wikipedia

Yarn is a verb,

Tell a long or implausible story: they were yarning about local legends and superstitions

The narratives we tell ourselves--about ourselves, about each other--dictate how we live, what we say, and how much good or ill we manage to do.

What Is Narrative Therapy?

The focus of narrative therapy is around stories that we develop within ourselves and carry through our lives. We give meaning to our personal experiences and these meanings that we come up with, or that have been placed on us by others, influence how we see ourselves and the world around us.

There is no "objective reality." People can have different realities of the same experience. What might be true for us may not be true for someone else.

@owasco's Lilylivered, a Weekend Freewrite includes these words of wisdom:
"Honey, the world has a lot of hate in it. Everybody thinks it's the other guy doing the hating. Just be sure you see hate in yourself when it is there, and turn it to love."

My mission is to transform hate to love,

and that includes the hate others harbor toward me. It's an uphill battle. A daunting challenge. Floor mat! Floor mat! is what I seem to be. I prefer to think of that woodland ephemeral, Violet! Violet!:

Forgiveness is the fragrance that the violet sheds on the heel that has crushed it.

Some at Steemit have created a narrative of negative things about freewriting. I'm not posting links here; you can find them if you really have time to squander reading about how freewrites can be unworthy of publication and a "waste" of a reader's time. To suggest that all or most or even many freewrites published at Steemit are a waste of a reader's time, however, indicates that someone hasn't read very many freewrites. Or someone has standards that I do not personally agree with.

This notion of the "problem" with freewriting is a snarled yarn in and of itself, but I don't want to talk about negativity and the judgments of others. If you come to me hating on others, I'll shed it like a duck's feathers roll water off its back.

Pardon me if I sometimes do a few good shakes, dog-like, and splatter whoever is lurking out of my sight.

Yes, there is a point to this particular yarn.

Someone who knows me at Facebook and Steemit stooped to lurking on my freewrites, taking screen shots of my comments to others here, and copy-pasting them to a neighbor of mine, with no other objective than to create more enmity and discord for me in my personal life.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out who did this, and how many other places this person has been sowing seeds of discord, apparently to make me look bad, or to punish me for God knows what act of sedition or irreverence. Very few people know which of my various neighbors I might have been talking about, and even fewer people would care. Anyone with half a brain would block this person, lock the door, and throw away the key.

Not me.

Do I retaliate? No. Did I ever wish any harm or embarrassment to this person, ever? No. Do I now? No.

I see this person as damaged. Sick. In need of help.

If the attacks escalate, I might call on legal resources to put an end to it. If I had concrete evidence of someone else's reputation being maligned, I'd fight like a gladiator to stop the sower of the discord.

For now, I continue to hope that the broken will be mended, the sick will be healed, and good will win out over evil.

That's my story. Is it nothing more than a yarn? It's my yarn. My narrative: I believe in forgiveness, redemption, and rehabilitation. I work to see the good in others, even when they're spewing vitriol at me, and only last night, gallons of it came spewing my way, but I don't want to talk about that person (this one is a face-to-face human who entered my life and cannot be extricated without several other amputations).

I couldn't find the source for this image, which I've appropriated from the Facebook page of @crescendoofpeace. But the quote is easy to find all over the internet. Gotta love Carl Sagan!

And #GottaLoveFreeWriteHouse,

where writers come together from across the world, from other cultures, races, education level, social class, occupation, and political persuasions.

This quote, I've appropriated from a freewrite by @whatisnew:
Are you looking for another caring community where your creativity and imagination can run wild? A place where you have the opportunity to win prizes for your participation? Are you looking for support or for a place that you would like to support? Then head on over to the Freewrite House and have some fun.

That Darn Ball of Yarn

I hope you take a minute to read that #freewritepoem. It's endearing and exemplary: look what a daily prompt and five minutes of freewriting can lead to!

DISCLAIMER:
I always take waaaaaaay more than five minutes before I hit 'publish.'

Freewritehouse has been good for me,

and none of our members has had it in for me, nor set out to downvote, disparage, or discourage me.

Thank you @mariannewest and all of you here for your positive contributions, your courage in sharing your freewrites, your good will, and your talent. When the dust settles in the arena--Here, there be dragons--one thing cannot be denied:

Here, there be talent!

Hi! Yarns can be weaved into many many things: shawls to protect us, nets to catch us, stories to teach us, or webs to trap us. I suppose they all have a place in the world. I believe that a hater is easy to identify, and only other haters give them the time of day. But that Carolhelion, now SHE knows what time it is and will give it to anyone who asks, maybe even to a fault.
Is that not the perfect image by @wales? I love it.
Now what is this? I can easily share to twitter through steemit? Gonna go try right now. Yesterday I entered a freewrite in two contest, and posted on twitter, and doing all that properly, including putting links to everything in my post, took way longer than it took to make the content, like WAAAAAYY longer. So annoying. If there's some way to save a keystroke or two, I am in!

You spun another poem - shawls to protect us, nets to catch us, stories to teach us, or webs to trap us. Great insights! "Only other haters" give haters the time of day - another great insight. Image by @wales.... those faces on your post...yes! How do you find these? Off to find these contest links. And yes, yes, sharing your post to steemit is so easy -a click of the icon, and you're in!

#Twitter! I've found @BRUNI aka our @wonderwop, ad Wes Philbin [@wesphilbin]
@WesPhilbin, but still hunting for @owasco.

lol I have exactly one follower on twitter, @agmoore. She managed to find me. I just joined two days ago. How do I find you? I have no idea how to use it yet.

Looks like we found each other!
#FollowTrain is one way to gain new followers, usually with the expectation that you #FollowBack. I'll get on it...this week I'm focusing on my first novel, Ironwolf, paring and polishing before I send it to David Lawlor in Dublin. If I'm quiet for a few days, that'll be why. Cheers!

I'm very happy with my followers on Twitter, two of the very best.
Good luck with the novel! I look forward to reading it! Is there any help I can give? I've never done that before. I can give encouragement though! You go! You've got this! You are the BEST!

You're too kind!!!
I'm about halfway through it now, and I've reached a point where I hate the thing.
"Omniscient Point of View is the kiss of death," modern editors say. And it's "just sloppy" to go head hopping from one character's POV to another in the same chapter. I know. I know. But I wrote this long ago, starting in 1990, having read too much pulp fiction in my foolish youth, having internalized too many "bad habits." Even J.K Rowling writes stuff like "His eyes followed her out of the room." Self-editing is so much harder than catching other people's rule-breaking prose. Thank you for the encouragement - it came when I need it most!!

On the PHC discord server there is a link to @wales stock photos, under the heading "starter kit". I've started to use it a LOT. And the PHC community post today features a post from @manoldonchev, who also has a large collection of images that we can use. Both are great sources for images, and we keep it in the family by doing so.

I love to try to freewrite for comments too. Some of my best stuff is in my comments. Too bad I can never ever find them again to use them in a post.

Just check out Twitter for freewriters who retweet other Steemians. E.g.

@crimsonclad

@carolkean I knew we were soul sisters when we met and how you handle the attacks is the Lord's will and your heart shimmers as you trust the One who heals all wounds to care for you. Prayers that His will be done and resteemed & tweeted. Freewrites are seeds and we know what grows of seeds.

Aw, I love you Janelle!!!
Your freewrites have blossomed and brought joy and comfort to all who've taken the time to read them. Bless you!!!

I am happy I do not(need to) read what others say about freewriters or freewrites. It gives peace of mind plus I do not care.
Most of what I read on Steem is not worth reading at all but I read it anyway.
What I write is always a freewrite, each story no matter if it is long or short.
I do not need to make notes first.

Let's enjoy what we do and read what we like and have fun. Happy day.

I am.happy to hear it worked @trendotoken👍

Amen!
Let's enjoy what we do and read what we like and have fun.
Right you are: No need to read what others say about freewriters or freewrites, and most of what's posted on Steemit isn't publishable elsewhere anyway, so if our freewrites don't meet someone's high standards, what else on Steemit does? You go @wakeupkitty! We love you! 💕

@carolkean If you ask me the freewrites do in every way and we provide in tales, poems, lifelessons, amusement, horror, life stories, culture, recipes and so much more 😀

I believe it is envy since we grow.❤️

❤️ I do believe in freewrites! I do! (Like the lion in Wizard of Oz and his spooks - the Muse being like a spook!) Thanks again!!

I know you do. It would be good if the rest does too. 😁 Happy day 💕

Thanks so much for all your kind words, and all your support, and all your freewrites!!!

@carolkean I thank you too. You know how to give me a good feeling. 😘

I am so sorry that you have these hateful people in your life Carol. I have learned from a couple of haters in my past towards me that they are not worth my time and energy, but when it got out of hand, I had no other choice but to put an end to it. I also hope for all of the things you do:

I continue to hope that the broken will be mended, the sick will be healed, and good will win out over evil.

Wouldn't it be nice if the haters were more like Pollyanna?
I do love how freewriters from around the world have come together, supporting and loving each other. I also thank @marriannewest for making that happen. And thanks to you Carol for all that you do for the Freewrite House and for spreading your love. Thanks for the kind shout-out too! BIG HUGS!

{{{ Hugs }}} to you too and thank you!

It should be so easy to shut the door on haters, but when they're geographically close or in your face one way or another, I struggle to stay focused on all that is good. Sorry to hear you also dealt with haters - and glad you found a way to "put an end to it." (Sounds like a story prompt!)

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out who did this

Not me. )))

For me, the list of whodunnits was very small.
It's not a freewritehouse member. :) Just a lurker.

Congratulations @carolkean, your post successfully recieved 0.3636495 TRDO from below listed TRENDO callers:
