Let me in on a freewrite secret. Many freewriters throughout the years have completely ignored the 5 minutes and just kept going - many for hours. Others used their 5-minute freewrite as the beginning of their writing or to come up with an idea and polished and expanded.
Actually, several books have been published that started with the daily freewrite :)

No kidding? I actually have saved some of my freewrites to expand later because it really helps getting the creativity flowing, but I like the 5 minute(ish) time limit because it makes me focus on what I want to write about and trims the fat on a lot of unnecessary details you know? To get to the point of it. Still, thanks so much for the tips and for replying :)
