Yesterday, I published my weekly article about the newcomers on Netflix last week. One of the movies featured in the article and the clip was the Woody Allen movie named A Rainy Day in New York. As I did my research for the clip and the article, I discovered the movie, and I at once knew that this is something I want to watch. As a result, I watched A Rainy Day in New York on Netflix a few days ago.
I have got to say that I am a bit selfish. Because, even though I publish such articles and make the YouTube clip to help others, I really discover lots of gems myself in that way, so it is clearly a win-win for Netflix fans out there, and also for myself.
The Woody Allen atmosphere
Have you ever seen a Van Gogh painting without knowing that it was made by Van Gogh? But, when you see it, your first impression is - that has got to be a Van Gogh painting. Or maybe Monet, or Dali? These are all painters with a very special style, that is quite easy to recognize.
Well, when you watch movies, there are a couple of directors that I find it quite easy to recognize. One of them is Woody Allen. These is something so special about the atmosphere of a Woody Allen movie, that makes it quite easy to recognize. There is a moment in the movie in which Timothée Chalamet sits down by the piano, and he plays and sings a song. This is such a Woody Allen moment. He could have played a cool pop-song, but instead, it is this light jazz, bringing the Woody Allen feeling strongly to the viewer. The way the movie is recorded, the way light is used, the way they are dressed... somehow this is very Woody Allen-ish. I guess this has made half my readers forget about the movie already. But, if you are a fan of Woody Allen, or if you haven't seen many of his movies yet, you know that you have something special to look forward to.
What is the movie about?
Timothée Chalamet (Gatsby) and Elle Fanning (Ashleigh) plays a young couple who has to travel to New York, because Ashleigh is about to do an interview with a famous movie director. Gatsby looks forward to show Ashleigh New York, while Ashleigh is totally in the skies because of her chance to meet one of her favorite directors.
Ashleigh meets the director, but somehow, the interview takes a totally different direction. Roland Pollard (played by Liev Schreiber) finds great inspiration in their conversation, and suddenly, he wants to bring Ashleigh along to watch his new work (which he strongly dislikes). And this is where it turns interesting, because suddenly Ashleigh meets more people in high positions, and they all seems to like her. And as a naive young girl, she enjoys this greatly. We can also see what a strong power celebrities have when they meet naive young girls, and how easily this can be abused.
Gatsby is walking the streets of New York while waiting for Ashleigh, and he meets an old friend, takes part in recording a scene for a clip, and he realizes, how much he loves New York and the atmosphere of the city.
Why I like the movie?
A Rainy Day in New York has the special atmosphere. It asks many real questions (without really asking them), and you don't really know how the movie will end, before it ends. That is actually one of the great strengths of the movie. I had a feeling as I watched, but I was never really sure. I loved that about the movie.
I have got to say, this isn't a fast paced movie... this is more like a quiet walk in New York on a rainy day, accompanied by the Woody Allen effects and music. It is a movie that will slow you down, and if you don't like it, make you fall asleep.
I, however, actually enjoyed A Rainy Day in New York, as it gave me a quite different movie experience compared to those that I normally have.
A Rainy Day in New York score
8/10
It should also be mentioned that besides Elle Fanning, Timothee Chalamet, and Liev Schreiber, you will also see Selena Gomez, Jude Law, and several other famous actors in the movie.
