Hello dear Steemians

When I saw that contest my attention was drawn by Liquorice because there is a funny story behind it. It was some years ago when at my work place a had a colleague she was from the Netherlands and she was very friendly, chatty person always had a fun with all our colleagues.

She often told us about typical Dutch stuff and of course we were interested in many of them, one of them was typical wooden shoes, that we thought very uncomfortable but she was able to convince us that this is very comfortable especially when they work on farms, fields and even in garden.

The other thing that she mentioned was Liquorice, we did not hear that before and she was surprised that there are people who have no idea about that delicious traditional for Dutch snack. She said that there are different types of them some more sweet and less intense but others could have very strong taste. She also mentioned that people either love it or hate it.

She then promised that when she next time back home then will bring some for us to try. We were very excited about that and next time when she arrived she brought couple of different Liquorice.

There was a box of “Haribo Color-Rado” that is a combination of different sweets, some of the Liquorice covered with sweet wrapping, gummy bears, mash mellows. Of course we immediately tried the Liquorice, first I thought that this is chocolate type but was surprised to have a funny gummy texture and also such specific taste that was not something that I liked. Then I tried the others that were wrapped in sweet cover, some with coconut pieces they were delicious. Only those ones remained my favourite until nowadays.

Often when we go to market especially in Germany we have Dutch stands that always sell Liquorice and I must say that they have completely different taste than when you buy such snack in supermarket. Every time when I hear Liquorice then I recall my Dutch friend and my first taste of Liquorice.

The time when we moved to UK, it was once when we were going to grill and were buying marinated meat, the funny thing was that my hubby saw that there is meat marinated in Liquorice, we never tried it before so thought okay, why not. But when we prepared one peace of it for test it was not possible to enjoy it due to specific taste. I remember my hubby tried to wash the other pieces but it was well marinated because the taste did not go away despite of leaving it for hours in sweet chilli sauce so unfortunately we had to throw it away, that was our dinner and we then just cooked some pasta because after such intense Liquorice taste I was not able to taste any meat.
Later on I found from my friends here in Scotland that it is not unusual and many like this type of marinate.

I would like to invite @beautiful12 and @shawlin

Liquorice from Dutch?
I got to know these delicious candies in Finland in 2017. And I've always thought until now that this is a Finnish story. I brought a lot of different licorice candies home, but my family didn't appreciate their taste much. But now they know what they can give me for my birthday.

Yes, I think Liquorice is from Dutch, yes it is very specific taste, people either like it or hate it.

Thank you, friend!

Yes, it sometimes can be spicy and very specific, but once you taste you never forget.

Thanks for verification :)

To be honest, liquorice is not my favorite, even with my "Dutch Afrikaans" background.
I don't eat just the plain iquourice. I will eat the coated ones, "Liquourice All Sorts," as we call them, and also not too often.
Liquorice marinated will be a no-no, that's for sure.

I am sure our friend, @wakeupkitty, will have a story or two to tell about liquorice.

Best wishes!
