Achievement 3 : Content Etiquette

Objectives of this Task is:

  • Newcomers have knowledge on Proof of Brain concept.
  • Newcomers have basic knowledge on producing and sharing quality/original content.
  • Newcomers embracing the existing Steem Community etiquette.

What can users post to Steemit?
Steem is an open platform meant to host and welcome any legal content that complies with our terms of service. Users can post anything they want, whether it be phrases, quotes, blogs, anecdotes, photos, videos, memes, songs, and more. Be creative! Source

"Proof of Brain" concept
Steem provides a scalable blockchain protocol for publicly accessible and immutable content, along with a fast and fee-less digital token (called STEEM) which enables people to earn the currency by using their brain (what can be called “Proof-of-Brain”) Source

Since the Steem Blockchain rewarding your post by producing original content that is from your brain, you are recommended to give citation or source to any of your content that consists of others' works.

Why do we, as Steemit users, need to cite our sources?
To produce and share quality posts with original content. Plagiarised and copy/pasted material, including images, is not original content.
Plagiarism is the appropriation of another person's work, be it text or image, without any attempt to give them credit. The goal of the plagiarist is to make it appear as if themselves are the source of the work.

How to Cite a Source

Citation

It is not sufficient to simply note that “text source is Wikipedia”. A link to the specific Wikipedia page where the content came from is required. If numerous sources were used, adding the source after each separate idea is recommended.

Every copy/pasted sentence should be either in quotes “” or formatted using the > markup.

Every paraphrased paragraph, sentence or idea should have a reference as close to it as reasonably possible to indicate its origin.

Example of Citation

Apples are a true superfood in my opinion. "Researchers have long been aware of the potential for apple consumption to support balanced populations of bacteria in our lower digestive tract." Source The antioxidant contained in apples is referred to as Quercetin and researchers believe that it prevents damage to human brain cells. Source

The above example post has one original sentence:

Apples are a true superfood in my opinion.

The next sentence is copy/pasted from its source without alteration and is thus in quotation marks:

"Researchers have long been aware of the potential for apple consumption to support balanced populations of bacteria in our lower digestive tract." Source

The last sentences is paraphrased information from a different source:

The antioxidant contained in apples is referred to as Quercetin and researchers believe that it prevents damage to human brain cells. Source

If you look at the linked sources, you can see where the information came from and how it was originally presented. A post that cites sources in this manner adds a lot of value to your blog and to the reader. It allows your reader to learn more by clicking on the sources and it makes your blog look professional. It also prevents you from being accused of plagiarism.

If you post and want to include an image that is not yours, you can use photos from the following websites that are free to use. Please add the link to the image source in your post.

You can use this markup template to source the webpage links into your articles
Markdown for citation

I am looking this up myself, but asking here just in case I don't find it, and for the benefit of people reading this in the future.

With the Markdown, I just use the sideways "v" bracket and it is Italic?

<test. > with brackets pointing out (it said this was HTML and could not be used in a comment, so I added the period and spaces ". >"

test< with brackets pointing in

Saludos a la comunidad, aquí mi entrada, gracias por el apoyo... Exitos para todos!!!

"... and please put a remarks, ' I have read and understood the Steemit Etiquette on Steemit Community and will do my best to embrace them' at the end of this task post. " Source

Question: By "task post", can you please clarify what you mean? The post charging us with the responsibility of the task? Or, alternatively, by "task post" you might mean the post we make displaying the final product we have created from doing the task?

Just curious. I could do both, I just want to make sure I'm getting it right. :)

Thanks!

Alti
