Last year I made a sketch that a lot of you liked
So I thought that I'd turn it into a digital illustration
Using my sketch as the basis (in fact I used an image of it as the background in photoshop), I first made an outline of the scene. This gave me roughly the equivalent of the sketch, but being digital I could easily change some of the details.
The next step was to fill in the background. Here, it is a room which is defined with 5 sides; getting the dimensions right is important for the illusion of depth.
After this I filled all the various characters with colors. But to get the effect of the lightning right (here it is one light source) adding the colors means to also add in the shadows that the light casts.
Anyway, I consider this as a work in progress as I am still learning a lot about shadow and light :)
