Microbiome: Key to Health

A human microbiome is a complex ecosystem of trillions of little living organisms that live within and on our bodies and have a tremendous impact on health and illness. Based in the gut, skin and other organs and tissues, these microbial cells comprised of bacteria, viruses and fungi have significant impact on the metabolism to the immune system.

Scientists demonstrated new evidence that the ratios of these microbes are critical to our health. For example, a healthy microbiome has been shown to be correlated with a healthy immune system and metabolism while dysbiosis, or composition of gut bacteria has been established to have a positive correlation with standards like obesity, diabetes, and autoimmune illnesses.

One of the currently most investigated systems is the gut microbiome. It was also established that gut bacteria play the role of synthesizing certain vitamins, digest nutrients and regulate the emotions of an individual via the gut brain axis. The more scientists and doctors continue to study microbiome, there will always be hope of developing treatments that will rebalance the microbial colonies necessary for the cure of chronic diseases.
