The intestinal microbiota or simply microbiota is a vast population of trillions of microorganisms colonizing the human digestive tract and serves as an essential component of the human body’s systems. Modern scientific studies have revealed the scale on which these microorganisms influence the functioning of human body with aspects such as digestion, immune response, individual mood, and more.

A healthy digestion is mainly achieved through the digestion and assimilation of food nutrients, synthesis of vitamins and immunization from pathogens. While having a symbiotic relationship and is beneficial in some ways, the said bacteria if out of balance can cause different health problems which include inflammatory bowel disease, obesity and metabolic disorders. Furthermore, recent research shows a close link between an individual’s gastrointestinal condition and psychological state, known as the gut-brain axis.

Diets, life style and antibiotics are known to be the major factors capable of altering the population of the gut microbiota. It is recommended that one should take fiber products, fermented foods and products containing probiotics in order to keep the gut healthy. Gut microbiota is still a novel concept that potentiality holds great promises in boosting health and thwart diseases.
