The Changing Landscape of Employment: From Stability to Uncertainty

Sincerely, jobs are not what they used to be. Unlike in the past where employees spend years with a company with the hope of going up the ladder and having security, nowadays things have changed as employees spend the lowest time in a job. Job employment went from full-time employing, to part-time employing, then casual, and now employment of gig workers have become the thing because no one wants to be liable.

Companies now are days now advertise job loss to their employees like they are advertising their companies to consumers because they want to motivate them to work more. Up until the 1980s or for other developing world the early 2000s, people could work on one job all through their lives as the employee were loyal to the companies they were working for. In fact working for a company now became a ritual for everyone, and people were known by their employed company's name. Getting fired was a big deal at the time, but this is not the same again as people now exist their work more often that usual.

Nowadays, being laid off is a good content on social media which can then become another career for the layoff employees. This is bad for companies and while companies keep pushing the sack narrative, people have to work to keep their jobs but as they do this, they now have it in mind that they can be fired at any time.

In the past, companies were responsible for training their staffs but this isn't the same again. The companies are tired of doing so, and the ones that still train are doing it for the shortest of periods. The concern now is what happens when all the money has been spent on training then the employees decides to quit. The company will be at loss and the employees gain the knowledge as well as free education. The thought of not spending the money and the employees wait is a motivation for not training staffs instead ask them if they have the skills before employing them. Companies that give their workers training aren't giving them one that would improve their skills, instead they would either give them safety training or one that would keep them focused on their field.

With the above condition, employees are ready to begin job at the first day of work since they already have the skills, and they can also quit from a company to a higher one since they didn't acquire the skills from the company and are not loyal to the company. With this employers are expecting that their employees are good at everything from day 1 but this isn't true as it would take the average employee 12 months to become good at the job that they do and this includes knowing even simpler things that doesn't partake to their roles.

In all this, it is surprising that workers productivity is in its all time high and then you wonder if it is because of the fear of losing their jobs that is causing this high or is it as a result of manufactured job uncertainty? There is this narrative that it is extremely difficult to find a job and then people decide to work extremely hard in the current one they find themselves but this is still funny because employees will always find a job before they leave their previous jobs.

The employment landscape has transformed significantly from what it was a few decades ago. Job security and lifelong employment have given way to a more fluid and uncertain job market. Companies have adapted by minimizing training and emphasizing job insecurity, which paradoxically has led to increased productivity among workers. While this dynamic benefits some individuals who can navigate the gig economy and leverage social media, it creates a challenging environment for long-term career planning and job loyalty. As we move forward, both employers and employees will need to adapt to this new reality, finding ways to balance productivity, job satisfaction, and stability.
