When facing a group of people waiting for you to speak, it could become really pressuring trying to figure out how best to break the ice. In other words, how best to get started. Many people start the presentation in the most awkward way, and in fact your audience don't want to hear you continue. It's a real challenge indeed to kick things off nicely.

I'll bet that you would have heard of many ways to open the presentation, and you may have applied a few yourself. The way you open is so delicate, that if you miss it, or do it wrongly, you risk never getting your audience excited through out the presentation. This is because your audience will make up their minds about you within the first 2 minutes. Hence, you must make it count.

For thousands of years, humans have been fascinated with story telling. So much so that people that know how to tell stories are always surrounded by people with open ears and hearts. It's really amusing. The fact is that, who doesn't love a good story, that is well told? Almost nobody. We all enjoy the thrill of a dynamic story.

This is the very thing you must tap into when starting your presentation. You should tap into the thousand years old minds and brains of humans for the unconditional love of story telling and hearing. So what you want, is to begin your presentation with a story. And there are a couple of ways to do that.

By doing this, your audience will be so captivated from the very blast. They'll literally leave anything they're doing and let go of anything in their minds, just curious of what next you're going to say. Thus, I'll give you a few examples of powerful ways to begin your presentation from there, you can make up new and creative ways by yourself.

You can start by saying, 'many years ago, I...', or your can say something like, 'When I was 16 years old, a wise man told me that....' or you could say 'When I woke up this morning, I...'. If you noticed, all these different start ups are tailored towards telling a story. And immediately people hear things like that, their attention just increases incredibly. And once you've captured their attention like that, you'll have a higher tendency of having a wonderful presentation.

Hello @greatideas!
Good advice to start a presentation, as you say sometimes what we find most difficult is to know how to start and get the attention of the audience, it is not just start talking and talking but to find the means to get the message and feel interested in participating. Thanks for sharing, greetings!

Very entertaining and educational post friend @greatideas, your advice to start each presentation or speech as if it were a story or tale is a pretty smart approach since it allows you to "hook" the listeners' attention as you explain.

Unfortunately, very good information is lost by not being presented in a pleasant and captivating way.

Best regards

You are correct, people are easily enticed with beginnings that describe story telling experiences and they fall in love with the speaker giving the speech.

Greetings @greatideas certainly is a good way to start and break the ice of the moments, I love when you express "Must take advantage of the millennial minds and brains of humans for the unconditional love of telling and listening to stories" with this we manage to arouse the interest of the audience. Thank you for your contribution

Storytelling. A "novel technique" that is thousands of years old. Hahahaha. What you say is 100% true. I am a public speaking instructor and in fact, I have already published some articles about it here at PH. Stories never get boring. Using them almost guarantees you a good share of initial attention. The rest is up to you.

Other ways that also work are: singing a song, presenting a statistic, starting with a sentence or maxim.

Excellent your article and the way of presenting it. A big hug for you.
