The causes of depression is mostly due to factors such as human experience or life event, Mental Health issue and chemical imbalance in the brain. Some examples of the common risk factors for depression include:

  • Breakup(s) from Past Relationship(s)
  • Loosing loved ones
  • Family history of depression
  • Trauma or Abuse
  • Chronic illness or pain
  • Addiction
  • Loss of Job
  • Divorce
  • Accident
  • Loosing a part of the body
  • Health Issues
  • Failure

There's actually more to the above list but time won't permit me to list them all. You'll definitely notice that most of the things that causes depression are mostly things we don't ever want to experience as humans. The cause of depression also varies from individual to individual depending on the person involved and that's why they do say "one man's food is another man's poison" due to the fact that what make some people depressed will or may have no effect on some other people.

There are also times we tend to experience slight mood swings or probably strange feelings in our brain, does this means we are also depressed? This explains why we need to look at the symptoms of Depression for a more valid assurance about our Mental Health.

**How To Know If You're Depressed *

Depression can manifest in a variety of ways, and the symptoms can vary from person to person. It is also important to note that if you experience some of the listed symptoms, it may not necessarily mean you are depressed as you may probably need little rest or probably medical attention to stay healthy. Some common symptoms of depression include:

  • Persistent feelings of sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness
  • Loosing interest in everyday activities
  • Mood Swings
  • Fatigue or lack of energy
  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
  • Lack of Sleep (Insomnia)
  • Changes in appetite or sleep patterns

If you're experiencing any of the above listed symptoms, it's recommended you speak with a mental health expert to receive proper diagnosis and appropriate treatment for your condition. It is also important to note that some of these listed symptoms may not necessarily be related with depression.

Some Tips to Help You Overcome Depression

Even though there is no specific solution for depression, there are many tips or strategies that can help manage its symptoms and improve your mental health well-being. These are the below tips that can help you overcome depression;

#1 Visiting Mental Health Experts:
A mental health professional or expert can help you identify the underlying causes of your depression and develop a treatment plan that helps you solve the issue.

The treatment plan can be in form of therapy, medication, counselling or combination of all. Another good advantage of visiting health experts is that you have access to free tips and guides about things the "Dos" and "Don'ts" habit that can improve your mental health and overall well-being.

#2 Live Healthy
Another strategy to overcome depression is to cultivate a healthy lifestyle habit by taking care of your physical and emotional self. This connotes that you need to start getting enough rest or plenty of rest if you are the type that never love resting. You need to start eating healthy diet such as fruits and vegetables and also don't forget to exercise regularly.

Another important thing we need to know is that doing things that makes you happy is also a means of healthy living and this is why i always recommend people to always engage in activities that brings you joy.

#3 Don't Be Alone/Idle
One of the reasons some people tend to have suicidal thoughts is mostly because they are always alone with negative thought running in their brain. An idle person will have more negative thought when alone compared to someone who is in the midst of positive minded people.

This is why I recommend avoid being alone most of the times most especially if you are the type of person who tends to develop negative thoughts when alone. You need to have a strong support system which can make a big difference when it comes to managing depression. Always reach out to friends and family members who can provide emotional support and encouragement.

#4 Challenge Your Thoughts
Depression can cause negative thinking patterns, such as self-criticism, low self esteem or feelings of worthlessness. Identifying and challenging these thoughts can help you develop more positive and realistic beliefs about yourself and the world.

This is simply synonymous to "Facing Your Fears". You can definitely win over depression if you start challenging your thoughts and facing your fears by not giving in or surrendering yourself.

#5 Get Busy and Stay Productive
My last recommendation is to stay busy and productive by setting big goals as this will keep you more focused on building your career and also improve your self development. Even though Depression can make it really hard to complete everyday tasks, which can lead to feelings of frustration and low self-esteem.

Setting more realistic goals and breaking them down into smaller goals and more manageable steps will definitely help you build confidence and a sense of accomplishment.

In conclusion, depression is an ubiquitous mental health condition that can be difficult to deal with and at least 5 million people suffer from this unhealthy condition every year across the globe. If you're experiencing symptoms of depression, reach out to a mental health expert for guidance, counselling and support. By taking care of yourself and putting the above listed strategies or tips to manage your symptoms, you can improve your overall well-being and start to feel better.

It's also important to know that we must always ensure we spread love and share words of encouragement to anyone going through depression. We must make them believe in themselves and be a source of light to their darkened heart due to the trauma or experiences they might have gone through which led them to such an unfavourable state.
