Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) – the technology that stands behind the progress of this kind of construction – breakthrough in civil engineering. These immense vehicles are usually referred to as ‘moles’ and are used for excavation in various categories of the ground such as; soil;rock; and both. The application of TBM is better than the ordinary drilling and blasting techniques because it has improved safety, speed, and cutting-edge tunnelling that is uninterrupted.
The presentation of today’s TBMs is that of a drum-like cutting wheel at the head of the machine to dismantle and clear material upon the progress of the TBM. Bearing the torn up structure, a line of conveyors takes the debris away from the tunnel. At the same time, using tightly linked disc cutters, the TBM employs precast concrete segments to shore up the tunnel face and walls.
Some of the technological improvements include auto piloting, constant checking, and monitoring systems that have led to improved accuracy with little or no human interference. These innovative technologies help to create intricate tunnel systems for transport, utilities, and logistics, leading to transformation and advancement of cities and urban infrastructures internationally.
