Previous Knowledge: The Key to Learning

The term “previous knowledge” is defined as a body of information including experiences that a person already has before being presented with new material. More often than not, this base is what determines how the new material will be learned and cohesive. New learners benefit through retention and comprehension when they associate what they have learnt to what they already know. For instance, if a student is learning algebra, it would be much more convenient for the learner who already has the principles of how to work on math. In most cases, teachers check what the students know well in advance in order to make sure that the current lesson does not contradict the previous instruction.
