A pregnant porbeagle shark tagged off the coast of Massachusetts was tracked to Bermuda, where it is believed to have been eaten by a great white shark. This is the first known instance of such predation.
In October 2020, researchers from Arizona State University tagged the pregnant shark with pop-off tags to track its movements. Five months later, the tag resurfaced near Bermuda, providing data on the shark's movements.
The shark had been swimming at depths of 600 to 800 meters during the day and 100 to 200 meters at night, with water temperatures ranging from 6.4 to 23.5°C. However, on March 24, 2021, there was a noticeable change in its behavior, with a shift in diving patterns and a change in ambient temperature despite similar diving depths.
