Have you ever been to a desert in Japan?

While I was a trainee for about 4 or 5 months in Tottori, my friends and I traveled on the weekend together. Tottori Prefecture is not a famous sightseeing spot like Tokyo, Kyoto, or Osaka, but there are some hidden charms that I'd like to introduce you to.

Tottori Prefecture

Tottori Prefecture is located in the Chugoku region of Japan and Tottori City is the capital. The sand dunes are a well known attraction and their famous food is made from crab.

How To Get Around Tottori

I recommend a taxi tour. There is a promotion for tourists where you pay 2,000 yen per person for 3 hours, with up to 4 people per car. I think it is a reasonable price. This time my friends and I used a taxi service. Please contact the staff at the Tottori Tourist Information Center to book one.

Our Route Today

Tottori Sand Dunes⇒The Sand Museum⇒Uradome Coast

Tottori Sand Dunes (Tottori Sakyu)

Tottori sand dune

Tottori Sand Dunes or Tottori Sankyu is located in the east of Tottori City and is a well known natural travel destination in Japan. It has the largest sand dunes in Japan and runs 16 kilometers along the Sea of Japan all the way to Sanin Kaigan National Park.

The 50 meter high top of the sand dunes is a hi-light. Each season offers different scenery, and it is covered with snow in the winter. You can enjoy the views over the dunes from the observation deck of the Sakya Center, which is connected with the sand dunes by a chair lift.

You can do some activities such as camel riding, paragliding, sandboarding, and horse riding.

There is a light-up event from early December to Chrismas day. The area near the sand dunes is lit up with beautiful colorful lights.

The Sand Museum

A short walk from the sand dunes, you will see amazing art made from sand. The them of the exhibition changes every year. Sand sculptures by artists from around the world are displayed. The theme of this year was The United Kingdom.

Uradome Coast

Uradome Coast

We went to our last destination, Uradome Coast in Iwami Town. It stretches for 15 km from Cape Kugami to Shichiyama. You will see wonderful caves, cliffs, and rocks formed by nature.

I think Tottori is a good choice for your next trip.
