Unforgettable Italy: Lo squero di San Trovaso [ENG-ITA]

Venice, city portrayed on countless postcards, destination of a hit-and-run tourism: Rialto Bridge, St. Mark's Square, Murano... just a few days to see the places that every guidebook has printed on its cover. By now we are hostages to the frenzy and superficiality of these modern times of ours.

But originally this handful of small islands were the refuge of people escaping from the raids of the invading Barbarians, who learned to follow the slow rhythms of nature, such as the placid, alternating and eternal movement of the tides. The slowness and the simplicity were the fundamental elements of the daily life of the Venetians and still today it is possible to find them in the Squero, that is the handicraft yard used to the construction and reparation of the traditional lagoon boats, among all the undisputed queen: the Gondola.

The one portrayed in the photo is the Squero of San Trovaso, dates back even before 1600, and is among the 5 remaining in activity. The house on the right is reminiscent of an alpine hut, as the squeraroli are axe masters who come from the alpine areas rich in construction timber, in particular from Cadore.

To bring to life this static image, I recommend the film La vita semplice, black and white film of 1945: in the squero live and work together 3 men, the owner Marco, his son Toto and a worker, Bepi. The activity is certainly not flourishing and gives a fair living. Max Caldi, a businessman who has moved to Venice with his sons, wants to buy the yard in order to demolish it for real estate speculation. The values of tradition and morality clash with the power of money, themes that are always topical even today.

Venezia, città da cartolina per antonomasia, meta prelibata del turismo mordi e fuggi: Ponte di Rialto, Piazza S.Marco, Murano... pochi giorni per vedere i luoghi che ogni guida ha stampata in copertina. Ormai siamo ostaggi della frenesia e della superficialità di questi nostri tempi moderni.

Ma in origine questa manciata di isolotti sono stati il rifugio di gente che scappava dalle incursioni dei Barbari invasori, che ha imparato a far suoi i lenti ritmi della natura, come il placido, alterno ed eterno movimento delle maree. La lentezza e la semplicità erano gli elementi fondanti della vita quotidiana dei veneziani ed ancora oggi è possibile ritrovarli nello Squero, ovvero il cantiere artigianale adibito alla costruzione e riparazione delle tradizionali imbarcazioni lagunari, tra tutte l'indiscussa regina: la Gondola.

Quello ritratto nella foto è lo Squero di San Trovaso, risale ancor prima del 1600, ed è tra i 5 rimasti in attività. La casa sulla destra ricorda una baita alpina, in quanto gli squeraroli sono maestri d'ascia che provengono dalle zone alpine ricche di legname da costruzione, in particolare dal Cadore.

Per dar vita a questa statica immagine, vi consiglio il film La vita semplice, pellicola in bianco e nero del 1945: nello squero vivono e lavorano insieme 3 uomini, il proprietario Marco, suo figlio Toto e un operaio, Bepi. L'attività non è certo florida e da giusto da vivere. Max Caldi, un affarista trasferitosi a Venezia con i figli, pretende di acquistare il cantiere per demolirlo al fine di una speculazione immobiliare. I valori della tradizione e della morale si scontrano col potere del denaro, temi sempre attuali anche ai giorni nostri.
