L’Opuntia microdasys, comunemente conosciuta come Cactus Orecchie di Coniglio, è una pianta grassa appartenente alla famiglia delle Cactaceae. Originaria del Messico e diffusa in molte regioni aride del mondo, è apprezzata per il suo aspetto decorativo e la facilità di coltivazione. Il suo nome popolare deriva dalla forma caratteristica dei “cladodi" (segmenti del fusto), che ricordano le orecchie di un coniglio.

Questa pianta si presenta con un portamento cespuglioso e ramificato; a differenza di altri cactus, non possiede spine lunghe e rigide, ma è ricoperta da glochidi, piccole spine sottili e setolose di colore giallo o biancastro, disposte in piccoli cuscinetti uniformi sulla superficie dei cladodi. Sebbene i glochidi possano sembrare innocui, sono estremamente sottili e possono attaccarsi facilmente alla pelle, provocando irritazioni.

L’Opuntia microdasys produce fiori durante la primavera e l’estate, se coltivata in condizioni ottimali. I fiori, di colore giallo, sbocciano all’apice dei segmenti più maturi e, una volta impollinati, possono dare origine a piccoli frutti carnosi di colore rossastro, simili a quelli di altre varietà di fico d’India, ma generalmente non commestibili.

Dal punto di vista della coltivazione, il Cactus Orecchie di Coniglio è una pianta resistente e poco esigente. Predilige posizioni soleggiate e calde, con temperature che non scendano sotto i 5°C, motivo per cui nei climi freddi è preferibile coltivarlo in vaso per poterlo proteggere nei mesi invernali. Il terreno ideale deve essere ben drenante, come un mix di sabbia e terriccio per piante grasse, per evitare ristagni che potrebbero causare marciumi alle radici. Le irrigazioni devono essere moderate, lasciando asciugare completamente il substrato tra un’annaffiatura e l’altra.

The Opuntia microdasys, commonly known as Bunny Ear Cactus, is a succulent plant belonging to the Cactaceae family. Native to Mexico and widespread in many arid regions of the world, it is highly appreciated for its decorative appearance and ease of cultivation. Its popular name comes from the characteristic shape of its cladodes (stem segments), which resemble rabbit ears.

This plant has a bushy and branched growth habit; unlike other cacti, it does not have long, rigid spines but is covered with glochids, tiny, fine, and bristly spines that are yellow or whitish in color, arranged in small, uniform clusters on the surface of the cladodes. Although glochids may seem harmless, they are extremely fine and can easily stick to the skin, causing irritation.

The Opuntia microdasys produces flowers during spring and summer when grown in optimal conditions. The yellow flowers bloom at the tips of the more mature segments, and once pollinated, they can develop into small, fleshy, reddish fruits, similar to those of other prickly pear varieties but generally not edible.

In terms of cultivation, the Bunny Ear Cactus is a hardy and low-maintenance plant. It thrives in warm, sunny locations, with temperatures that do not drop below 5°C. For this reason, in colder climates, it is best grown in a pot to allow for protection during the winter months. The ideal soil should be well-draining, such as a mix of sand and cactus potting soil, to prevent water stagnation that could cause root rot. Watering should be moderate, allowing the substrate to dry out completely between watering sessions.
