In 2015 I was living in Manchester NH working as a Merchant Marine out in Alaska. One of My best friends had bought a starter set and told me about a new Disc Golf Course opening that summer. I was like cool Ill try it out. So I did what any former ball golfer would do and research equiptment. Thats where it fell apart.
There was no real discription of how discs fly. There is estimations based on throwing the disc at it's optiminm speed and angle but as you learn to throw that all goes out the window. Why? Because each disc is unique and based on so many factors the best thing a beginer can do is find a mold they like to throw and learn how to throw it.
This was learned in 2016 when I
happen to be on a single round and met up with one of the local touring pros and his son. They let me tag a long and watching the two of them play was an art i really wanted to learn. The best advice i got that day was play a month of just using your putter. So I did. Over 70 rounds. Not only did my score drop 10 points, I learned angles of release.
2016 was a tough year. I came down with type 2 Diabietes and made the decisession to leave the merchant marines due to the hazzardous nature of the job and what is was doing to my health. I played a lot of Disc Golf that Summer. I also lost about 30 lbs.
That summer was when I played 2 to 3 rounds a day. All Summer. It was a summer that changed my life. I have multiple dissabilites that prevent me from achieving optiminim throwing releases all the time. So I am constintly battleing old age and some of the after effects of what ever caused my immune system to start attacking its self.
But that is the wonderful thing about Disc Golf. Its a game that is still easy to play, creates great opertunity for exercise, and allows you to be outside enjoying nature. The real best part is that most courses are free and the discs can be bought for as little as $5 a piece. So $5 gets you started.
The feeling you get from throwing a perfectly thrown disc and seeing the flight line is something everyone should have the chance to enjoy. Then if you have a good friend such as I have that I still enjoy playing rounds with then you create memories as well. Those my friends are priceless.
