Overcoming That Lingering Worry That You Are "Not Enough"

Sad as it might sound, it sometimes feels like our modern world is made up of mostly worry and anxiety over a great many things. Joy and happiness almost seem like they have been placed in the back seat.

A very substantial number of my counseling clients come to me with variations of the worry that they are "not enough."

I expect it's a feeling many of us have experienced at one time or another, perhaps in connection with starting a new job, or maybe even when going into a new relationship. Situations from the past pop into our heads and we start worrying that we are going to fall short, disappointing other people... or even disappointing ourselves.

It would be easy to just dismiss such worries with the recommendation "You just need to work on your self-esteem!" but there is often more at play, there.

What's often overlooked in this equation is that the hurdles we have to jump have become higher and higher, with each passing decade.

Societal expectations keep piling on our shoulders, and the burden feels heavier and heavier as "the world" raises the goalposts for what a "successful" life is supposed to look like.

As such, people's fears of "not being enough" are not irrational!

One of the often difficult realities I help people face is the fact that all you can really do is "your best," but you may discover that your best isn't actually enough in some situations.

When that happens, all we can really do is take a step back and ascertain that we truly did do our very best... and try to embrace the fact that we can't do better than "our best."

Beating ourselves up over a perceived shortcoming makes no sense... instead, we must endeavour to celebrate trying really hard, and take pride in the fact that we did do our best!

It's not your fault that the world sometimes sets standards that are not achievable by most human beings!

Thanks for reading these words, and Bright Blessings to all!
