Thank you @saxopedia for this contest. Music has the power to affect our emotions. I'm the type of person who always has a song to describe my feelings at any moment in time. From hip hop to classical, gospel, pop, R/B amongst others my taste in music is quite eclectic. To say I have a favourite song will be a major understatement, as I relate passionately with more than a hundred songs.
One very powerful song I want to share is Speechless by Naomi Scott. I first listened to this track from Alladin the movie. As per the norm for me, i immediately downloaded the song and it's lyrics and played it on repeat till I knew the song by heart.
Naomi as Princess Jasmine sang Speechless when she was imprisoned by the guards on Jafar's order. Verse 1 is a vivid description of how being told to be silent feels like. I can really feel what she's describing as it it something I've endured personally.
And then she takes a decision that not anymore. She refuses to be quietened down just because she is female and her opinions on matters considered "male domains" are unimportant and null. The tempo gives it the feeling of hope for change.
Suddenly, the tempo increases as she belts out the lyrics. When I listen to "Speechless", I'm reminded that my opinion matters. I do believe that generally, women and men have greater affinities toward certain areas. But what I will not stand for is that one's opinion does not count when concerning areas they are not stereotyped to fit in. There is freedom of interest and expression and thus, we are the only ones with the power to decide what matters to us.
The song always leaves me hopeful and determined. For all I know is I won't go speechless.
PS: All photos are screenshots of the song in the genius lyric app.
