Dry Season vs. Wet Season

in homesteading •  8 years ago

I have taken a lot of pictures over the course of the almost year that we've been at the house we are at, and so for those of you not used to having a dry and wet season, here are some pictures just to sum things up:

Wet Season : Usually June-September/October for us in Southern Florida

Things are pretty green

Plenty of rain to go around, no need to water anything

Dry Season: Octoberish-May

Things look really dry and sad. We haven't even been here a year yet, but our neighbors say that in 30 years, they've never seen the creek go completely dry (it did earlier this year).

I counted 5-6 times that it rained from October of last year to March of this year (and when I say rain it was more like drizzling.

Most of us out here are on shallow wells, and some people had their wells go dry earlier in the year. We were fortunate to not have that happen, but it could've happened at any time!

I've gotten wiser since then and added to my rain catchment system for when the dry season comes again. I hope to not have to use any well water to irrigate my crop. We really take something (like water) for granted until it's gone and we really need it!

Yes indeed! It was dry. Here on the west coast, we had wells go dry too. Many brush fires and wildfires that devastated neighborhoods with the loss of several homes. Then in early-mid June (earlier than usual) it rained for days. Suddenly our drought was gone and now there's standing water everywhere. Go figure!

I'll take this over months without rain anytime! Mosquitoes suck though!

Truth!

I see all your tree planting. Good idea. Tree roots hold ground water!

True! And they also give me fruits!

Wow when you say dry season you really mean it. You have a lovely place. Thanks for sharing. We have had nothing but rain, for three weeks straight, our farmers are at risk of losing crops. We are located in Canada. Thanks for the good post. Following

Ahhh man I hope it lets up for you all up there! That would be a pity :/

Me too. Hyper Inflation will be around the corner if the sun does not shine soon. My tomatoes plants are yellow, and not thriving because of all the rain. Thanks

We also have a dry and wet season here in Cambodia... though the difference is as striking as yours! Love tropical climates though!

Me too. I'd love to go to Asia. I've heard Thailand is nice and friendly :) land of smiles.

Thailand is beautiful... but Cambodia is the true land of smiles! Most friendly people I have ever met ;)

We have a dry and wet season from maybe June to December. Is that a Ratchet Cactus I see there?
