Guava Update (Almost Ready to Harvest!)

in homesteading •  7 years ago  (edited)

Good evening, Steemians!

I was just outside, taking a look at the guavas and our pink guava tree. They have ballooned in size this past month, and gone from a dark green to a lighter green color.

The two biggest ones, when I squeeze them, are starting to get soft. For pink guavas, the best way to tell that they're ripe is when they start to smell fragrant.

So, I stuck my nose up to the bottom of one of the guavas, and ever so slightly smelled a hint of guava. Even though they start getting soft, I'm not going to pick them just yet. I'm going to wait until their smell starts to get more pungent.

The bad thing is that they can go from this stage to having fruit flies and overripe in a short amount of time, so many people will pick them a day or so before they're going to eat them, and then let them ripen up inside for a day or two.

Anyway, I can't wait to harvest these guavas, as it will be my first guava harvest ever! I think it could be as soon as Saturday or Sunday, so be on the lookout for a post.

Thank you very much for stopping by, Steemians!

Love stewed guavas..your photos are wonderful!

Don't think I've tried those. Most likely cook them while unripe, right? Thank you!

Cook them when they are half way to ripe! The flavour comes out so well.

Mmmmm sounds great!

Enjoy your day !

Just ate my first ever guava two days ago!! Not that I grew, mind you, but you can bet I will be getting a few guava trees now :) Those look fantastic!

Pink are best for juicing, while white ones are best for eating! 👍

Okay thanks! The ones I had were pink...I'll be on the lookout for some of the white ones too :)

Hehe nice that made me chuckle :D

They are so delicious in smoothies. We had a few trees when we lived in Kampot!

Nothing better than fresh picked fruit, cept those ones u need to leave ripen a bit longer :)

It looks like they're doing very well, how many years does it take to get the fruit? I didn't know you had to cook them.

You don't have to! But stewed guavas are a dish that many enjoy! I have never tried them, but I really love fresh guava (not cooked)

Are those the fruit that is referred to as a miracle cancer fighter ?

Hmmm I have heard that, and I eat guava almost every day, but you might be thinking of soursop (guanábana)

Yes . Soursop. That's what I thought I was looking at . Not to say what I'm looking at is not attractive . Far from .

I have a soursop tree as well :D Not fruiting yet though, but the leaves smell out of this world!
