Applying for a New Job

In my current position I am effectively 2IC and I am now ready to be 1IC! After lots of self reflection I have decided to take the jump. So whats involved in getting promoted in the education system here in Australia.

Firstly

You need to produce a CV and response to Selection Criteria that does not go over 5 pages in length and contains all of the vital information and data sets to get you noticed by a panel. I have spent more hours than I can count getting this document ready, and I am pleased to say that I only have a few more hours left to get it finalised!

Secondly

If your CV and selection criteria are good enough, you may be selected for an interview with a panel of people for the position. Here you get the chance to 'sell yourself' as to why you are the best person for the job. I'm not too good at selling myself and talking myself up so this is an area I need to focus on.

Overall, the process can be a bit stressful and painful and you don't always get the right person for the job. It's hard to ascertain, sometimes, whether someone is the right fit just from what is written on paper or at an interview. I have seen many people talk the talk but not been able to walk the walk.

Hopefully I'll get an interview and I'll keep you posted on where to from there!

Thanks for reading!

Good luck mate. My last public service selection criteria response was about 19 pages and I think I spent a week on it, so good to see you have a 5 page limit.

Yeah but it's pretty painful trying to cut it down to 5 pages! See how it all goes.

Good luck! I was lucky my last three jobs were positions where I was asked to come over. No application required just a get to know eachother meeting.

Good luck! I reckon you'll be a great 1IC :)

and selection criteria is terrifying I think I've only ever done it for one job about a million years ago

That's ridiculous. You would not have to do that to get the top job in the private sector. Good luck though!
