First time Knifemaker

in knifemaking •  7 years ago

I've always been interested in making things. Whether it be woodworking, metalworking, coding, or whatever! Some recent posts on Steemit have convinced me to try my hand at knifemaking - and here it is, in all it's glory.

Shout out to my little brother for making the leather sheath (also his first)

It's far from perfect but it's the first one with maybe more to follow? Overall, it was a fun project and I'd definitely consider doing it again

Damn looks mad legit, especially for your first try. Always way doper using something you made yourself :)

Looks great man! I love the walnut handle. If you want to etch the blade with a custom logo it let me know. It is super easy and turns out really nice.

That would actually be really dope. Do you have an etcher? I guess it's just a battery and electrolyte huh..

I/we know a guy who has one, I am sure he will let you use it... when we did it I was amazed at how good it turned out. You can get some amazing detail, signatures or whatever...

and something to block the etch. I've seen people use a laser-print as a etching mask.

we tried fingernail polish and tape and had great luck with the polish.

Awesome, what did you use for the blade? Did you melt and forge or use a blank?

Being my first knife, I decided to go with the stock removal method - so basically I just had a flat bar and cut out the shape, ground the bevel, blah blah. This steel happens to be A36, which is horrible knife steel (it doesn't harden well). This blade won't see much use, but it was cheap..like .65 cents/ft. so I felt safe practicing.

The next blade will be something good - like O1, D2, or 1095

That's awesome. I have a few chainsaw bars I plan to turn into knifes if I ever get that free daylight time.
