Genius or Bad Dad?

Do you ever have one of those ideas or hear one that just sounds too good to be true? You keep milling it over in your head debating on if it will really work or it will end up wasting more time than it will save? I run into that dilemma every year when it comes to the Christmas tree. Everyone wants a tree, to get that Christmas vibe going, but it always ends up being a lot of work or at least in our house it does.

Each ornament unwrapped and placed on the tree before heading out to get the years new one or sitting down to craft some for the year. 25+ years of ornaments taken out of the box and placed on the tree, year in and year out. Adding at least seven every year for the ones at home and every few years packing up a box for one of the kids to take to their new home.

This year we tried something different, the first present of the year to myself and my wife from the both of us to both of us.

The event that follows makes me wonder if I have taken away from the yearly celebration. Will this allow us much needed time next year or will it be an event that is missed?

I know, I enjoyed this method much more than the normal yearly holiday wrap up

Putting the tree up this year before Christmas took 6 hours between getting everything out of the attic, un-boxing, unwrapping the ornaments, placing them on the tree and doing the lights

Putting the tree away this year took 15 minutes from start to finish

Haha. We dont have space to store the trees like that, but even if we did we enjoy the laborious process every year haha. In fact I just took down the Christmas lights outside with my oldest :D

Our plan next year is to say Santa's helpers are bringing the tree to let Santa know where to drop the gifts. It was a very wonderful experience for a long time but as the kids got older, it lost it's luster.

This is the smartest lazyman thing I have seen in a while. Definitely copying you next year XD

We will have to see the unwrapping to see if it truly was a great idea, lol

My dad does something similar but his trees branches are hinged so it just folds and they wrap it!

This one sort of does that too but we left over 100 items hung as it stood. Praying it isn't a huge mess next year.

Nice idea lol , I will try this next time .

Saves a ton of time!

Haha...my mom has been doing something similar for at last the past 6 or 7 years - no it must be longer than that because she was doing it even before we moved to Thailand - maybe 10-12 years? Anyway she makes it even simpler by putting a large plastic bag over the whole tree and then moving it just like that to the attic. Next Christmas comes along, bring the tree down, take off the bag covering it - Bob's your uncle! Takes like 5 minutes including the time taken to carry the tree down the stairs.

Did it ruin Christmas for you at all?

Nah, but I was probably in my mid to late 30s when she started doing it lol
Honestly though I go through the same as you do every year, and if I could I would bag that sucker and put it in the attic. I'd even be happy to take off ornaments and put them on again the next year, as long as I don't have to mess with lights. Of course my wife and the kids are in charge of ornaments so...

I remember my boys didn't really care about putting up/taking down the tree. My older daughter loves it, and the two-year old hasn't been old enough to participate until this year - she loved it too.

So, I guess it depends on your kids.

I do have memories of the annual cuss-a-palooza from MY dad each Christmas during the erection of the tree, maybe that's why I'm in favor of the efficient (not lazy) method.

Americans.... :D

lol, so you're just saying.......lazy?

pretty much. Soon you will have one of those electric scooters to go and get letters from your mailbox.

Ha! Already have a human that hands them to me!
