Happiness is Overrated?

in life •  7 years ago

The pursuit happiness is one of the core tenets of freedom. The ability to decide what makes you happy and then having the ability to pursue it/them through whatever legal means necessary is an important but often underrated cornerstones of freedom.

What does happiness mean to you?

Different people have different things that make them happy. There is no standard and generic formula for happiness. One man's heaven is another's hell and vice-versa. For some, happiness entails money, to get rich no matter what, and forsake other things like a career, love, family, friends etc. Others combine some of these things at different proportions.

Everyone requires a plan

As an individual, its best not to lay your happiness on another person or group of individuals perception of happiness. Everybody requires his own plan. What could be lowly mediocrity for some could be where you would reach maximum happiness, and vice versa.

It's quite obvious in this day and age that most people would consider what would make them happy to be lots of money (affluence) or power and affluence. I won't go all out and say they are wrong or right. But pursuing this "happiness" requires a lot of sacrifices and concessions that often ruin the prospect of future satisfaction

I'm firmly belief that our pursuit of happiness should never trump our present or future happiness

Well said @fisteganos. I also like to add that it is also not good to put our movement/mobility on another.

I agree with this, we should be aware that our actions today will affect us tomorrow in different ways.

A jolly good fellow

Well said, wordsmith!
We define what happiness means to us...

I agree! Pursue happiness without sacrificing your core values. I believe everybody should have their happy places, whether in other people, or places or things. However, pursuing this things and excluding all else might prove detriments to one's overall happiness in the long run...

Sometimes in our pursuit for happiness, we mortgage short term happiness for long term and vice versa.

In the pursuit of our happiness, its important to note that nothing or no one can give permanent happiness and not let them determine our happiness. No one owes us this. Thanks so much for this wonderful post @fisteganos.
Then finding happiness in whatever one does is also very important. Gracias!

The unfettered pursuit of happiness ironically tends to leave us unhappy and alone because we often resort to instant gratification and trampling others to obtain what we desire.

Affluence and power are the primary means through which humanity pursues happiness; however, worldly, external happiness is fleeting and said means are frequently achieved at the expense of one's character.

Thus, we ought to focus on cultivating internal happiness - recognizing that it is a choice and a skill that we can develop like a muscle - and instead pursue meaning.

I'm glad you made out this point clearly

As an individual, its best not to lay your happiness on another person or group of individuals perception of happiness.

People ought to just know that happiness is intrinsic. And nothing can make them happier than being contented with one's self and loving one's self. True happiness flows from within.
