So today my goal is to accomplish 3 things
1 Dispel some myths about caffeine
2 Tell you about the science behind it
3 Give you some tips on how to implement this into your life

Separating Caffeine Fact from Fiction

Consuming Caffeine will burn fat - Mostly Fiction

  • Caffeine mobilizes fat into fatty acids, but it’s up to you to actually do the physical activity required to burn them

Caffeine is bad for my heart - Fiction

  • Caffeine is perfectly fine in most doses, only chronic overconsumption has been shown to have potential negative consequences (more on what we can define as overconsumption later)

Caffeine will keep me up at night - Fact

  • Caffeine inhibits receptors that tell you when you’re tired which can cause it to be difficult to fall asleep

Alright now that we’ve got some myths out of the way let’s move on to a little more about what caffeine actually does

Caffeine Science

So what exactly does caffeine do?
Caffeine prevents the binding of adenosine in the brain. Adenosine is essentially a hormone that slows your body down when you’re tired. This also cause an increase in dopamine (pleasure) and norepinephrine (fight or flight). Norepinephrine turns out to be pretty important here as it has been shown to both decrease appetite as well as mobilize the fat from your fat cells into fatty acids that can be burned with physical activity. So caffeine has the potential to have some pretty solid effects.

But…

There are also some drawbacks to caffeine use
Caffeine can affect your hormone balance, drinking lots of caffeine while already stressed and under-rested can elevate cortisol levels which we don’t want. Cortisol has all kinds of nasty side effects.

  • Weight Gain
  • Mood Swings
  • Anxiety

Caffeine also has the potential to decrease your sleep quality like I said earlier if you consume it too close to bedtime. In my experience, I just don’t get tired enough to go to sleep, so I end up tossing and turning.

That’s all Great, but How do I use this in my Life

1 Try to eliminate over consumption of coffee

  • My opinion on the definition of overconsumption is when it starts to become something you’re overly reliant on, or you’re consistently exceeding 400-600 mg per day. (4-6 cups of coffee a day)

2 Don’t drink your coffee at night!

  • Unless you’re not planning to sleep any time soon as caffeine can stay in your system for multiple hours

3 Consume some caffeine before the gym to mobilize your fat stores

4 Don’t sweat it if you down 8 cups in a day to pull an all nighter for something crazy important because at the end of the day it won’t kill you.

What’s your favorite way to get your caffeine fix?

Something cool I learned during my research, Thanks for reading!

This is really good. I drink a cup a day. Keeps me from getting migraines which I use to get all of the time. Good post

Thanks! I'm lucky to have never experienced a migraine

Really great post, Im a coffee lover here, and I think the quantityis and qualities arethe key to make it a good thing in your life. I drink 3 cups a day of organic coffee and I think the benefits are so much and it may not have so many bad things.

It certainly can have a lot of benefits!

I don't think I could ever give up my coffee habit.
I quit smoking. I don't abuse alcohol. I don't do drugs.
My addictions are work and coffee. LOL
Now, that's pretty interesting about having coffee before a workout. That is something new I learned today! :)

If you were choosing between giving up coffee or cigarettes, I'd say you made the right choice!

Great article. I generally avoid caffeine after 5 pm. Though it works as a great pre-workout. Which is better, Black coffee or something like cappuccino, which generally includes a lot of milk??

Thanks! I usually only drink caffeine as my pre-workout or sometimes when I'm heading into work as a pick me up to make it through my shift.

nice article.
here is also a theory why people who smoke cigarettes usually drink more coffee...nicotine induces an enzyme that is responsible for the metabolism of caffeine... I think it's CYP 1A2 if I remember right. Thus: more cigarettes, more active enzyme, less coffee/caffeine effect because it's eliminated faster... I noticed this when I stopped smoking. I never had a problem with drinking coffee in the evening (because I simply love the taste) but a few days after I stopped smoking, I had to skip that habit because I sat in my bed, eyes wide open at night :D

I'm not familiar with this enzyme, but it certainly makes sense. I'll have to look into this because I'm curious

Great articl! i Have coffe for my fix, i been addicted to the starbucks very bery refresher for a bit tho haha, and it has caffine in it,
Following!

Thanks! I try to steer clear of Starbucks because I know how delicious those drinks can be. They'll suck you right in haha

My parents have a gift where they drink coffee at any point in the day without losing sleep. They drink a cup in the AM, a few in the afternoon, and one just before bed. Sleep heavy like a log. It might be because they have done it for years too. Awesome post, glad you are in the competition with me for Community Engagement challenge Look forward to your next post.

I'm sure they have quite the tolerance built up from years of heavy consumption. Thanks! I'm going to go check out some of yours now.

I am only a little a lot behind their tolerance built up and that might be for the best!
