I Got a Week Off School For This???

in life •  7 years ago

The time has come to remodel the kitchen so my mom said I could have the week off school to help. My job is painting the cabinet doors which is a very time consuming and tedious job, each door taking almost an hour and a half. There are twenty six doors and twelve drawers which is going to take a grand total of 55 hours to paint(around 2 1/2 days working nonstop) if I was working by myself. Thankfully I have help with the cabinet doors today so that will make things go a little faster.

So what makes the process take so long??

First I have to take the doors off the cabinets and then I take all of the hardware off and put it into a snack bag for later. Another part of this step is making sure you are organized so you put the right doors back where they belong. To do this I put a sticky note marked "A" on the door, and then I put another sticky note marked "A" Where the door goes.

Next I have to clean them off. To do this I am using Krud Kutter and a rag to get all of the grease and grime off the cabinets.

Then I have to sand them off so that way the paint will stick. I tried using a palm sander but I found out that a piece of sandpaper works better.

Next came a coat of primer. This stuff dries in like 20 minutes so by the time I primed three cabinet doors I was able to go back and start painting the first door.

Here is what the first coat looked like compared to the primer.

Doing the second coat was a little more difficult than the first one because I had to be a lot more careful not to get any imperfections or streaks since there was only going to be one more layer after this.

Then came the third layer and a polyurethane coating. They turned out a lot better than we thought they would when we started painting them. The best way to make the doors look good is to use a paint sprayer but since we don't have one we used the next best thing, a roller for the main surface and a sponge for the little decorative crevices.

Here is what the cabinets look like on their second coat without the doors.

Another thing we did in the kitchen was to make a shiplap accent wall which was really cool.
