Why It Is Really Important To Have A Hobby

in life •  8 years ago

One of the perks of being humans is that we can do countless amount of things that other species simply can’t do. Playing a guitar, check. Reading books. Check. Hiking. Check.

We have at our disposal, innumerable ways of spending our time. We love to spend time doing things that we love and have a passion for. These are called hobbies and are different from one person to another.

After spending most of our time on work and other personal matters, whatever time we have left as “leisure”, we turn to our hobbies to satisfy our innermost selves.

But it is not only because we love to do these things that they are important in our lives. They can be beneficial in a lot of ways that we don’t even notice. That is why, even if you don’t have enough free time, you should pick up a hobby or two.

1. Hobbies Can Boost Creativity

Some hobbies can really make you more creative. Hobbies like painting, sketching, gardening, knitting, photography, reading books can all enhance your creativity.

I used to read a lot of books and it helped me improve my creative writing and to express myself better. In case of painting, your creativity is directly expressed on the canvas.

Some hobbies have an indirect effect on your creativity which you will notice in other areas of your life, like your work performance. You never know where and when that hobby of yours can serve as just the thing to get ahead of the curve.

2. Hobbies Encourage You To Take A Break

As I have stated before, the modern life is a pretty hectic one and we can barely manage time to finish up the really important tasks of daily lives.

That is where hobbies come into play. We love doing them and so at the back of our mind, we want to find time for them and more often than not, we do.

This ensures that you take a break from routine doing what you love to do which will help you relax and clarify your mind. You might consider this your down time or recharging of the mind.

3. Hobbies Can Boost Your Confidence

As you spend more time tending to your hobbies, you will get better and better at them. The more you practise something, the better you get at it.

So, each hobby can turn into a talent and it is always so nice to have something that you can do well. For example, singing, dancing, playing a music instrument, photography or programming.

Knowing that you have managed to develop a talent actually boosts your confidence. It puts you in a more positive state of mind and you will be motivated to try your hand at other things as well.

4. Hobbies Offer New Challenges

Whenever you learn something new, you have to start from the very beginning. You don’t know anything about it at first, you make mistakes and you learn as you go. Sometimes fast, sometimes slowly.

Picking up a hobby has a similar effect. It is kind of related to the previous point but in this, the journey is the main focus. You go through new challenges which do not actually feel like challenges because you love whatever hobby you have.

In a way these are positive challenges in contrast to the negative ones which we have a few of in our lives. What better way to grow than to take on challenges that you love.

At this stage Steemit is my hobby. I feel very positive once I've spend an hour or so on Steemit. Don't know about the confidence boost though...sometimes I feel like I'm writing for the birds in the trees....lol

Yeah, writing is my hobby too. I love it.
What I meant from confidence boost was much more personal. It doesn't have to be appreciation from others. If you realise that you are improving in whatever area, it will definitely increase your confidence on having an extra talent.

That is true though....I do feel very accomplished when I finish a piece!

Yes, and in the long run, that feeling will only amplify when you will have a large reservoir of your own content!

Hobbies keep your mind, body, and spirit healthy.
