thank you starflyer-9000, it's quite difficult to explain it in such a way that westerners can fully grasp the full meaning. I do my best though.

Thanks haydeart, as I explained in one of my other replies, it's actually quite difficult to fully capture in writing the meaning when going from Chinese to English, often there is too much cultural defaults and history that go along with the usage of words in Chinese that have no direct translation in English.
Since there are few bodies of work around bridging this gap on the internet, I do feel that I am at least offering a good starting point for those who are interested, and of course, as a point of reference is very useful for people who happen to be searching about this idiom on the internet!

I think you´re doing quite good there :) But maybe it´s, because of the fact that I´m living in Asia already for some time so that I might get the meaning easier :)

It's actually quite amazing that each idiom has quite an in depth background story behind it, and yet, there is no where on the internet that explains much of it to English speakers.
Aside from understanding the language from these idioms, it's also very much an expression of wisdom accumulated from thousands of years of history. I think it's important that this kind of cultural exchange happens more. Only then can the East meet the West.

You might check on my blog some time if you´d like as I try to get started to share my adventures as well (Definitely not a very good blogger yet :D)

How interesting, so you can speak quite a number of languages! Of course German and English, but maybe Korean? or even Chinese?

I´ve just got German, English and a bit of Spanish in my Portfolio :) In Korean I was just able to read it and knew some basic phrases. Unfortunately I forgot most of it as I don´t use it anymore :( Regarding Chinese I´m actually considering to take some classes as I´ve got a lot of chinese coworkers now :)
