Psalm 23:1 (NASB)
“The Lord is my shepherd, I will not be in need.”
The Lord not only knows our feelings but also understands our true needs. Even when we do not receive what we desire, He still cares deeply about our well-being—our health, the forgiveness of our sins, the experience of His presence, victory over our enemies, our precious identity in Him, His grace and mercy, and the promise of an eternal home.
At times, it can be difficult to distinguish between a true need and a mere want. For example, a house is merely a structure; it cannot replace a home. Some people may already own a comfortable house yet continue striving for a more luxurious and spacious residence. However, such a desire is not a necessity, and we should not expect the Lord to fulfill it. Instead, what the Lord truly desires for us is to cultivate a harmonious family and build stronger relationships with our loved ones—this is a genuine need.
Another example is the pursuit of knowledge. We often seek greater knowledge, believing it will enable us to serve the Lord more effectively, which appears to be a worthy pursuit. However, if we focus solely on obtaining higher academic degrees while neglecting life skills and the wisdom to navigate real-life situations, then the pursuit of knowledge becomes merely an unnecessary desire.
Thus, the Lord reminds us to seek His kingdom first, trusting that He will provide for all our essential needs—our food, shelter, and everything necessary for life.
Matthew 6:31-33
“31 Therefore, do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles seek all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
