This was a new year, grade 6 and one mischief maker who liked to play pranks listened as the teacher talk her talk. She sounded nice and a bit strict at the same time.
He hoped that she was fair and not keep everyone in when one kid plays up. That is what the teacher last year did. She was hard to like.
Ever since grade 1 Jed was the class prankster. Playing pranks and jokes on others made other kids laugh and made him feel appreciated and liked. He used to watch his father play fun jokes on his mother and she always laughed. It was a happy household. Before he started grade 1 his dad told him to always do his best, get his work done, have fun and laugh.
Jed followed his dad's wise advice. Actually there was no holding him back! He would put the whoopee cushion on seats as his friends sat down outside for lunch, tie a string to pencils on friend's desks and tickle necks with feathers attached to the end of his ruler in the classroom. He managed to be sneaky enough with the teacher, she mostly never noticed.
Now and then that he would hear a teacher say, "Jed Smith, put that away and get back to work!" He knew when to pull his head in.
The classmates always giggled at his pranks particularly when done on the cranky teacher in grade 5. No-one ever dobbed him in. This teacher was mean and used to punish the whole class. Hiding her cigarettes was entertaining.
Yes, Jed liked being the class prankster, he had a lot of friends. He was careful not to go too far because then his parents would be called to the school.
Cheers and blessings

Oh, yes! I think parents don't think sometimes, or in actuality, they see and emulate.
Great story and shows how innocently these things can start and be like a runaway train.

Morning @dswigle, I don't think parents are aware of the big impact they have on their kids. In Australia we have a saying, he is 'just the chip off the old block!'

Oh, yes! We have that one here too. Also, when they do something bad that is obviously copied behavior, we say, "they come by it honestly."
Parents are totally in denial.

That is a very nice way to explain a child's behaviour. And parents not coming to the party sounds very familiar. Admitting to their child's behaviour is far too confronting.

The saying here is, “the Apples don’t Fall Far From The Tree.” 😊

Did the parents ever get mad at the teachers and take the kid's side like they've started doing in later generations? Because when I was growing up, the REAL trouble you got was from your parents when they found out you did something wrong or got into trouble.
Then later generations started thinking their spoiled, precious kids would never do anything like that so the parents would yell at the teachers.

Morning janiton, yes and yes. I remember when my dad roused at my brother constantly breaking his glasses at school. And in my guidance days when some parents came to school because their kids did their broke rules they were told not to punish them because it was a school problem and it was adequately dealt with at school. Or the parents who considered that their Johnny could do no wrong. I have loads of different stories for posts, haha.

I bet you ran into some real crazy parents and then you could see why the kid had behavior problems!
