in minnowtowhale •  8 years ago

Hello my lovely Steemians! I hope you are all having a great start of the Weekend.

Hitting our list of Weird Foods of the World Series and coming straight from The Philippines, ladies and gents, let's deep dive into this really weird food that is : BALUT!!!

BIZARRE FOOD : BALUT
COUNTRY : PHILIPPINES
WARNING : IMAGES MAY BE DISTURBING

Balut 3.jpg

BALUT is simply a developing bird embryo!!! Most commonly duck eggs but also made with chicken eggs! It is boiled and eaten from the shell itself with a hint a salt and vinegar!
Below a Balut Egg seller

It originates from the Philippines, but is very famous in the South East Asian countries like Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam and Laos.

The egg is incubated for a period ranging from 14 - 21 days, depending on the preferences of taste!!! Then it is boiled and served!

You’re supposed to tap a hole in the top of the shell, sup the savoury liquid and then crunch down the rest of what’s inside – feathers, bones and all. Bon Apetit!!

If you had the chance would you taste it? For me it's a big NO!!!

Thanks for showing the team love 👊🏼

i tried balut before , surprisingly i love it ! Hahahaha the boney texture is weird but satisfying at the same time !

Oh wow, that's great! Can you let us how the taste is like? Any common taste?

Who eats this shit

Normally what you call 'shit' is actually a delicacy for others! Minimum we need to respect others traditions and culture.

Well said and good point!

Thanks for your support on this dear! I just hate when someone disrespect others cultures

Had to upvote this

You know, we just had a few of those yesterday in our duck's nest. They did not completely hatch, but we never even thought of eating them!

If i'm not mistaken, it takes approx. 30 days to fully hatch, right @papa-pepper? Apparently it has great taste, but me too i have never had a thought of eating it. My heart will not accept it at all!

35 days for Muscovy Ducks. The @little-peppers made a post on them recently.

Thanks for the info mate! I'm checking right now! Stay tuned for more surprising, weird and bizarre food in the world. And i also share some great and simple recipe for anyone to cook easily at home.

Cheers

Another awesome post! You're killing it man :)

Thanks mate!

Anytime!

Hey can you change your First Name on the Poker League to your Steemit username with the "@" sign included please. Thanks!

Tried it here once here in Cambodia! Not my thing but they love it here.

That's interesting! Would be great if you can tell us what it really taste like? Like chicken or eggs? Weird questions going through my head!!!

It didn't finish it all. Didn't like the black juice that comes out of it! The egg white was kinda yummy although it looked gross with all the small veins running through it! The meat tasted like pheasant or other wild bird and the beak and feather I didn't eat or try. It isn't my cup of tea but I tried it to please one of my Khmer friends! It is only fair you know... she tries my food, I try her local delicacies... although the fried spider is one crazy step too far... I tried a leg and that's where I drew the line hehe!

It's amazing to discover all the different traditions and cultures around the world! I enjoy learning these! As we are not used to it that's why it becomes difficult to cross the line!

You got courage for that leg though!!!

uhmm if you eating this, your a soul eater......DEMONS !!!!!!!!!

Yeah man i would probably have to pass on this one. MAYBE if it was featherless and boneless lol Thanks for the post man!! #minnowsupport

Thanks for stopping by @vagaboncritter! I am in the same situation like you, I don't think i'll have the guts to eat it! Very difficult indeed!
Cheers
