Undefeated light heavyweight contender Dominick ‘The Devastator’ Reyes made quick work of former middleweight champion Chris Weidman in the main event of UFC Boston on Friday night.
Weidman making his debut at light heavyweight had designs on squaring off against the pound-for-pound best Jon Jones after his bow at 205 however Reyes put pay to any thoughts of that happening within 2 minutes of the first round.
Last week I questioned the wisdom of Weidman stepping up to light heavyweight and my fears were well-founded.
Despite Weidman getting in deep on a double-leg and securing the takedown in the opening minute, Reyes was able to easily get back to his feet, wall walk and complete separation. It spelled trouble for Weidman.
As ‘The All-American’ attempted to close the distance again, Reyes slipped Weidman’s one-two and countered with a beautiful straight left-hand from the southpaw stance. Weidman dropped to the floor. Reyes pounced with a couple of hammer fists and the fight was over.
Reyes has now put himself in line to fight Jon Jones for the light heavyweight strap.
Hopefully, this fight will put pay to the impression that the light heavyweight division is a soft touch. There are some beasts at 205.
Also, the development of the game Anthony Smith and Thiago Santos should be appreciated more. They are on a different level now than they were at middleweight. Hopefully, other middleweights thinking of making the 20lb jump to light heavyweight will take a pause for reflection. The light heavyweights in the UFC are not to be trifled with... take heed Stylebender!
He is not ready for Jon Jones and stands no chance. He needs to beat someone not moving up in weight (Reyes). Beating Weidman doesn't really say anything because Weidman doesn't belong at that weight.

Reyes has had a couple of good wins at light heavyweight (OSP and Cannonier in particular) and does have the tools to cause Jon problems in the stand-up. However, I agree it might be too soon for him to take on someone as seasoned as Jon Jones.

Jacare Souza is next to make his LHW debut against Jan Blachowicz who already eliminated Luke Rockhold though i think Jacare will prove to be a handful for any LHW.

I'm not so sure, in his prime Jacare may have done well at Light Heavyweight but now I think the young lions in that division will eat him up. They're too big, punch too hard and they're striking skills are too good for him. I think Blachowicz will win that match-up.
