Film Review – Annihilation – 7 out of 10

Dear Steemians,

It’s been a long while since my last movie review (it was Three Bollboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), but here I am, back for another one!

After also had covered Darkest Hour and The Shape of Water, I’ll share with you my opinion on…

Annihilation.

Written and Directed by Alex Garland (a name we will all know by heart sooner or later and responsible for the Master Piece “Ex Machina”), this film is based on a novel by Jeff VanderMeer, called… Well, yes, you’ve guessed it: Annihilation 😊

If you’re a fan of pure scy fy and been waiting for a good film of this genre (maybe since… Life), this is a good one to watch.

Starring one of the best actresses ever – the Great Natalie Portman –, this movie is a psychedelic journey through a quarantined zone controlled by the military. Ok, the “controlled” part is maybe too much, since a lot of teams get in but none gets out and I will not tell you anything else, because I don’t like to spoil!

The whole film is very well constructed and immediately you get the feeling that its history was not originally made for the screen: usually, too much detail on extraordinary events always sound like “the writer took way too long to create a world of his own and obviously preferred to write a novel, otherwise quality would be lost”.

Lena (Natalie Portman) is a cellular biologist who had been a soldier in the US Army. She’s the wife of the only soldier who came back from “The Shimmer” aka Area X and she signs up for a walk through this area where laws of nature don’t seem to apply.

With a very good performance from Natalie Portman, this movie is a good watch if you want to sit down and be entertained, while at the same time digest strange things that happen when laws of nature don’t apply. The visual effects are really good and the you really want to follow the story all the way to the end.

Besides that, I didn’t find this the best film ever and there are some scenes that could have been better thought of… But I love the end! :D

Overall it was indeed a decent movie, but i also felt it was lacking something.

Good point with the adaption issue. Some ideas don't really translate that well to screen. Perhaps the second view will open another layer, though

I agree with you. The whole idea of the film is very interesting and quite original (but it was primarily written for a book), the visual effects are really good, Natalie is Natalie, but... Yes: something was lacking.

Although I love Natalie, I think she was not the best option for this character. If only Alex kept Alicia Vikander...

I loved the movie, certainly a fresh entry for the sci-fi space, crowded with garbage!

The main low I guess it's the character development of the other members of the group.

Overall, I'd rate it with an 8!

I agree with you... It has been crowded with garbage... What's the latest good one you saw?

Regarding Natalie or Alicia, I can imagine the second on the role, but the first actually does a good job, don't you think? :)

I loved Ready Player One, have you seen it? :)

She does, but I think Alicia is the actress of the moment for this type of movies, just a personal preference :)

I haven't seen it yet, but I'm planning to :)
And it's a good one to have, since Alicia is indeed a very good actress!
