A really sad story of categorical decisions and the stupidity of humans:
Brazilian Rosewood was endangered by people with more money than brains building whole houses from it in pissing contests with their rich frenemies. So some governments decided that they would DESTROY all Rosewood as part of legal bans on its use, including (unbeknown to the narrator) Japan.
I decided to sell my 415 voice flute, purchased on eBay from a Brazilian and made of Rosewood by a Brazilian Luthier before the endangerment. It was purchased by a Japanese recorderist, but was BURNED by Japanese custom officials!
How many rare and beautiful objects (recorders with Ivory inlays?) have been lost to the inability of governments to enforce de-forestation?
